Punch Bowl Re-Filler
Utah leaves the MWC and business as usual. BYU hints at leaving and chaos ensues.
C'mon, it's not as simple as that. Had it been BYU or TCU or Boise State leaving first, it would also have been "business as usual." The MWC would have just added the next biggest program they could get (like a Fresno State, Nevada or Utah State). But when you have the TWO biggest programs leaving - or threatening to leave - then chaos ensues.
BYU has a huge nationwide viewing audience. But they aren't irreplaceable on their own, unless the other big schools leave. And that's exactly what was about to happen.
But it's really a "mute" point. By 2014, many schedules and TV contracts will expire across the bigger conferences. There will be some major upheaval. As I mentioned before, I foresee four "Super Conferences" emerging. And I'm not the only one. Other national columnists have predicted the same. So whatever happens by Sept 1, it's probably just a 2-3 year stop gap. BYU, TCU and Boise State will be in different conferences by 2014. And the WAC and MWC - if they survive - will be "mid-major" conferences.
