Well is there a young SGA that could be gotten through a trade at the moment?

If there is one, then trading Markanen to get him would also be a great option as the young budding star would be a better for fit our timeline.

Or a Jalen brunson?
The answer to your question is maybe.

There is simply no way to know. When OKC traded for SGA they didn't know he would be an MVP level player.

Clippers didn't know sga was going to become an MVP level player or they wouldn't have traded him.

There might be a young player out there who will be a future MVP candidate that a team would be willing trade to us but no one knows what player that is.

Same thing with draft picks. Other than rare exceptions (LeBron, wemby, etc)

Btw we kind of almost did it when we traded Donovan. He was all star level but not MVP level and we traded him for a guy nobody thought all that much of that was underutilized and that player (Lauri) was quickly an all star level player.

1. Try to be competitive

Honestly I would do the same strategy that has been done the last two years. I know some people hate that, but I think it's been productive. There's no way you're trading Clarkson/Collins for anything of value unless you put them in positions to succeed around a functional roster. The West will be strong so it wont be hard to do a half-season tank that gives you good odds on a top pick while making the players you want to trade look good and your young guys get quality experience trying to win.

2. Consolidate picks

I just dont think having 3 rookies on top of the 3 second year players is productive (especially when considering you have 3 picks in an expected stronger draft next year). If they do keep the picks, I would prioritize stash guys like Nunez/Dadiet/Djurisis (not that these guys have to be stashed, but I assume it's an option) or upperclassmen like Scheirman/Dillon Jones/Enrique Freeman over 18/19 year old projects.

3. Use cap-space to sign projects/bad contracts.

Just dont think there is any clear FA that I have to have. But this would also be entirely dependent on who we draft and who we trade. If we are trading Kessler and arent drafting a center, I would be interested in Hartenstein or Goga. KJ Martin/Naji Marshall would also be interesting if they were cheap. DeReon Seabron is a RFA 2-way guy, if he isnt picked up by New Orleans I would want him. Maybe there is a really quality character vet out there who doesnt mind not playing and is happy just collecting a check for being cool, I would sign a guy like that as well.

4. Keep Lauri

It would have to be a truly special package for me to move him. I wouldnt want a bunch of random/mid-tier quality picks. I would need a blue chip prospect w/ a blue-chip potential pick along w/ the mid tier picks.

5. Keep Sexton

Hardest choice of them all. It would be much easier for me to trade Sexton than Lauri. If we moved up in the draft to take a Castle I would move him. If he somehow got us a starting quality wing, I would move him.

6. Trade Kessler

Easiest choice tbh. I really want Edey in this draft and I would also be very excited to sign Hartenstein.

7. Trade Collins

If you can do it without giving up anything of significance, sure, but if not, just keep him. He should improve his value this year by playing better and having one less year on his contract.

Houston felt so good about it they went out and overpaid for Dillon Brooks, FVV, and attempted to on Brook Lopez.

Yeah so off the top of my head the "OKC strategy" might be to follow the following steps 1-4:

Step 1. Trade for (or Draft) a potential future All Star
Step 2. Accumulate picks as many as you can
Step 3. Be really bad a few years to develop young players
Step 4. Fill in the blanks and shoot for the moon

We currently have 2 and are starting to do 3, and 4 can be done relatively easily.

But we don't currently have Step 1.

It requires skill and a bit of luck for sure, but we now really need to focus on accomplishing Step 1 be that through the draft or trades.

The Jazz have done nearly everything right other than trading for Collins and not getting lucky in the lottery.


Hopefully the Jazz pull off their version of OKC's 2022 draft in they get a top 3 player in the class in the back end of the lottery. That's the most important step of all these "models/strategies" you have to pick the best player that everyone else passed on.

He's really good and trading really good players is generally not a great idea if you're trying to build your team up. It's a weird position because I would like to trade him (becaues I genuinely believe size is the most important thing to build around and small guards are one of the easiest value propositions when acquiring players), but I need a team to really recognize his value.
