What's new

Black non-criminals almost as good as white criminals

When I was in high school I worked at a small supermarket - we put an AD in the paper for stockboy and my boss told me if anyone who "sounds black" calls in for the job, just tell them it's taken.

That was 1990 and I'm sure things haven't changed much since then at the blue collar level - which seems to be most of the jobs that were applied for in the study.

I will say that's changed somewhat at the white collar level - while I'm sure pockets of racism exist everywhere, in my lifetime I've seen black folks with at least some education/experience make major strides in consideration for entry level positions in many white collar industries.

Sometimes it's that obvious. More often, it's just a matter of who the boss thinks will "fit" into the workplace, and what role they will "fit" into. Such notions get treated subjectively, and then subjective issues, such as your comfort level with a person whose skin color is different, affects your judgement. The great battles of racism are no longer sitting where you want on the bus, but small, continual accruing of advantages that enable some people over others, with the first group not even recognizing them. Even more telling than the hire rate is the downgrading/upgrading phenomenon, where whites with a criminal record were more likely to be offered a better job than the one they applied for, compared to black men with no criminal record. I'm sure the people doind the hiring didn't think they were racist, did't hate blacks, etc. Yet, the effects are still racism.

One would have to be most ignorant not to recognize that these prejudices still exist, so this is not exactly earth-shattering news.

The question is, what's the solution? What can we do to (as northeast would say) blur the lines?

Artificially leveling the playing field, IMO, only exacerbates prejudice and racial tension.

So how do you force people to take race out of the equation?

we talked bout this in my civic issues class before finals and its so sad but i dont think you can force anyone to take race out of the equation. the only thing i thought of is like if society was completely changed from infurstructure and ideologies and all the newborns were conditioned without it. the only way is if they grow up without any insinuation of race in any regard tv, movies, and, race, included.

thats not possible though i dont think plus i think there will always be selfish and greedy and hurtful people so if they arent discriminating by race in this "new world" they might discriminate by eye color, shoe size, body type, arm hair length, bad breath or anything that separates one person from another.

ive grown up as the butt of racist jokes my whole life but its made me so much stronger so i personally dont mind racist people. they just serve as motivation for me to succeed past them

Racism in some form/to some extent will always exist.

However the best way to fight it is thru education and exposure to diffirent cultures and peoples.

Black people have that cool attraction in Utah and get hired easier because people want to be around them. I have no study to prove this but it's true, I know it.

What's the basis for your opinion? Could you defend it against an alternate hypothesis that if there were more black doctors, more people would see black people are having equal potential to be a doctor?

Crittercam wanted me to tell everyone hi.

So get this, I've got a black dude for a client and when he calls, I can't understand a freaking thing he says. I have to ask him to repeat himself probably 10 times a conversation. Let's assume that I'm hiring someone to answer my phones and this guy calls or comes in for an interview. There is no way I'm hiring him to answer my phones. So, does this make me a racist?

I did think that it was a little presumptuous of them to think they could pick out three equally presentable characters. Or even group up people they thought were equally presentable (X) how many ever groups they put out there. You can't really do that.

Is that PDF the extent of the study? I'm just curious if they mix and matched any more. I'd like to see felon v. felon v. felon and a few other mix and matches, just for fun. And maybe the racial makeup of the job interviewers would be interesting.

Just my own limited experience. That's why I stated it as an opinion.

Could you defend it against an alternate hypothesis that if there were more black doctors, more people would see black people are having equal potential to be a doctor?

You're talking apples and tire irons here. I don't believe that statement conflicts with mine.

The crux of my post was, I believe things like Affirmative Action just increase prejudice where it already exists. That is an indictment of those prejudices, not of AA. If there were more black doctors because the road to becoming a doctor was made easier for blacks than others, simply for the purpose of increasing the number of black doctors, and people knew it, it wouldn't change the minds of those who harbor prejudice. But if there were more black doctors because they were given the same opportunities, that probably would (hopefully) change some of those minds.

No. There are plenty of  I wouldn't hire for the same reason.

In all seriousness I would love to see this same study performed on african american business owners, or indian, or jewish, or mexican, or Israeli, or Turkish. I just find it extremely prejudiced to assume or act as if caucasians are the only race that is prejudiced against other races. I guess caucasians are in places of power more predominantly in America so they are an easy target, but ALL RACES ARE RACIST. This very study is technically racist. **** whites, blacks, jews, gypsies, mexicans, ****, arabs, fish, big cats, werewolves, people with lazy eyes, hairy *** old men, women with mustaches, and **** you. That is all. That last one was meant to everyone and to no one.

how old are you? 15? mentioned two other races - african american and mexican (hispanic), but the rest are not races. Most israeli and turkish people are caucasian and judaism is a religion. Any race of a person can be jewish. grow up and read a book or two before you comment on something like this.

Mexicans have hispanic in them. They are not a hispanic race. That race comes from the other side of that great big ocean Saltair is built next to.

I can't even get the overtechnical corrections of the hyperbolic correction right? I was fully sober when writing that too...
