What's new

Boise St. VS VT

Wasn't it just last year that BSU held a public campaign trying to fill a spot in their schedule and no BCS teams would take them?

I remember laughing at that because I thought it was so ridiculous. Those kinds of games only come out of relationships that have built between AD's over a significant period of time. Just because Boise is finally ready to play the big boys doesn't mean they should come beating down Boise's door. For years, Boise purposely built weak schedules in order to go for those perfect seasons, rather than testing themselves against BCS schools. Fresno had to take rip-off deals with BCS schools for nearly a decade before they started getting return games in Fresno. Countless times they would play the away leg of their agreement and then they would get bought out time and again and never come to Fresno. Only now have they began to see games like Cincinnati and Illinois at home. Potentially Ole Miss next season.

Over the past few years, Boise finally decided to start testing their program against BCS schools and that's why they're beginning to see games like Oregon at home (last year) and a neutral site game with V-Tech. It takes some time and they have to swallow some pride. That's just the life of a mid-major program for the most part.

As far as my feeling on this game, I was hoping for Boise to win, even though I pretty much hate them. I think them being in the NC picture is a good thing for CFB. Until Fresno comes in and finally beats them on the smurf turf this year, anyways.

What are you even trying to argue here or what is your point? Boise St had little chance to make it to the BCS National Championship game, and you're acting like this doesn't hurt them. Do you know how the BCS rankings work?

You say this loss kills any chance of BSU in the title game. I'm saying an undefeated BSU with a win against a BCS conference champion gives them a chance. That the ACC champ/Orange Bowl participant has a loss to an FCS won't change that fact and won't hurt their chances.

Fail.

No. 3 Boise State opened the season by beating then-No. 6 Virginia Tech in what amounted to a road game in Landover, Md. Boise is off this weekend and preparing for a season in which many expect the Broncos to go undefeated.

But no matter what they do, their chances for a spot in the Bowl Championship Series might have been a fatal blow on Saturday by -- of all teams -- James Madison. The Dukes of the Championship Subdivision, which is the level below the major college teams, stunned now-No. 13 Virginia Tech 21-16 in Blacksburg, Va., on Saturday.

This is significant because the computer ratings used in the BCS formula consider, among various factors, how well a team's opponents do. On top of that, the human voters will look at a team's opponents while making their rankings. Had Tech been able to stay among the top 15 or even 10, that would have helped Boise tremendously, both subjectively and in the computers. Now, Tech figures to fall out of the polls. And there are no other currently ranked teams on Boise's schedule. What figured to be its biggest victory of the season suddenly is devalued.

All is not lost, because top teams could lose, Tech could rebound and Boise could finish undefeated and make its case. But after just one game, it sure doesn't look promising. -- Thomas O'Toole

Polls determine 2/3 of the BCS rankings. Computer does 1/3.

If Tech wins the ACC, they're going to be ranked in the top 20. Probably top 15.

Human polls will see Boise beating the ACC champ. That will trump humans seeing Boise beating a team that lost to JMU.
