Boozer: Rose Will Be Best PG in League

Does anyone else think the rush to anoint Rose the MVP is totally ludicrous? By what measure is Rose the best player in the league? Is it based purely on being the best player on the team with the best record in the Eastern Conference?

...despite a few 10 turnover games, you have to put Rose right up there in MVP voting this year! He has led the Bull's to the best record in the East, held down the fort when other key players were hurt and out of action, and he's almost impossible to stay in front of, given the fact that palming the ball is not called in today's NBA. He hits big shots, plays defense, and does just about everything else well, too. Heck, he's even responsible for Boozer having a good year on a new team and maybe he's inspired Boozer to play a little defense as too! He's got my vote.

One of the most overrated aspects of Rose.

Rose's much celebrated increase in shooting percentage (and much cited increase in three point makes this season) belies a simple fact: He's still not a good three point or long two point shooter. On threes this season he is shooting 32.9%; good for 30th among Point Guards in the NBA. In clutch situations that number actually declines to 25%.

His shooting looks better only because it was so bad before, but improving to mediocre is not a strong position for an MVP case. In reality, the much cited stat about how many threes he made this season vs. his previous to has more to do with the fact that he quintupled his attempts per game behind the arc than a move from a terrible percentage to a barely respectable one. That greater reliance on taking more threes, btw, has actually moved his overall shooting percentage down from 48.9% to 44.0% and his effective field goal percentage down by a similar margin. As a result, there's a strong argument Rose has actually taken a functional step back in this area of his game.

You haven't figured it out by now that "the best player" in the NBA usually means "the guy that's on the best team"?

Rose is good and all, and he can take over games with his scoring, but guys like Wade, Kobe and LeBron have been able to do that just as good or better than Rose for the past 5+ years. It's clearly getting caught up in "wow, this guy's good... he's probably like the best!!!" as the best players just go about their business and it's nothing eye-catching.

A few weeks ago someone said that Rose was "All World". I totally disagree. He's certainly the best player on the best team in the East, but as Kicky pointed out, there is a ton of room for this guy to improve. I will say this guy has no ceiling. If he develops a better long jump shot, no one will be able to defend him. Pick your poison.
