We don't know he turned down an offer of $3M. Kenwood was just giving an example. I'm sure Fes probably has injury insurance that would pay him at least equal to the QO he's receiving this season for a few years.

What if Houston offered a 3 year deal at $5.5M? We don't know what it was. In any case, I think Fegan's team has probably told Fes the WORST case scenario is to be offered an Elson-type deal. Heck, even Jarron Collins still has a spot in the NBA. That right there tells you how many teams are desperate for big men.

As a RFA, Fes wasn't going to get many good offers. KOC has set a good precedent: 1) Utah is willing to match a fair (or slightly above fair) contract even if it means going over the tax limit and 2) make an exorbitant offer to try and hurt the Jazz and Utah will walk away from it like they did with Matthews.

At a minimum, Fes will get a $1.0M contract next season. He's young and with his size, there are several teams that would give him a shot, especially as an UFA. Very high probability he gets a nice contract next season with very little risk if he mitigates it with insurance.
 
I'm thinking Fes told them he wanted an offer before training camp started or he was going back to Utah. Hou wanted to see if they could get Dampier to commit, and if not they had Fes as a backup. Training camp eve came, no resolution from Dampier. Fes says I am going back to Utah before all my options are gone.

Yeah, I would imagine that Fegan was driving the decisionmaking. I bet Houston offered a multi-year deal at no more than $2 million per, because they offered Dampier 2 years for $2 million. Fegan probably thinks that he can get 2x or 3x that much next year if Fes does anything this year, which I think that he will, even if Sloan stupidly doesn't get him on the floor even in times when he would be especially useful matchupwise.

Hopefully he won't hold it against the Jazz; Utah probably was willing to sign him for multiple years (OK, two or perhaps three) at the QO, maybe with standard raises, but didn't want to spend more this year because it was a dollar-for-dollar tax and because it makes it that much harder to get under the LT if they land another Kirilenko-shaving trade.

I personally go crazy every time I hear of anyone turning down a higher paying job anywhere for any reason. I mean it's more money, right? What other factors can be more important??? And don't get me started on people who give some of their money to others! I mean what the hell! Do they realize you can buy things with money?!? It's baffling.
