Getting Danny Granger is my number one fantasy as a Jazz fan. But I don't think there's any way the Pacers give him up unless it's a deal they can't refuse. A deal they wouldn't be able to refuse, in my eyes, would bring them both a point guard and a power forward, with one of those -- most likely the point guard -- being a minor star of near Granger's stature.
Granger's availability has been overstated, I think. For example, both of the trade rumors that involved Granger in the past year have been a bit of bunk. Remember the Granger for Al Jefferson rumor? It was simply an offer that was made -- that Bird is said to have not even considered. Bird has also said that the Devin Harris rumors were overstated, saying that Danny Granger is a great young player who a lot of teams have interest in, and it would take a lot for another team to get him.
Presently, he's the only thing keeping the team in Indiana. He is their franchise. His contract is one of the best values in the NBA. There is no reason for Indiana to deal him unless it's a deal that meets their needs and puts them into the playoffs.
They are in the third year of an oft-stated three-year rebuilding plan. All of the bad contracts they have been so patient with are coming off the books at the end of this season. They've been patient, and now that they're finally in a position to do something positive -- even if that's just letting those contracts expire so they can pursue some great free agents -- I see them sticking it out.
