What's new

Brian Johnson New OC at Utah???

This screams as a settling move or that they had no other options they liked. There's nothing to do but hope, but Johnson was a magical player in that he didn't have phenomenal physical talent but was particularly intelligent on the field. Hopefully that translates.

I don't think it was a settling move. If Utah did have over 70 applicants for the job, I see no reason they'd have to "settle" for Brian Johnson. Actually, I've heard some say that it was a very calculated move by Whit as he tries to establish a certain enviornment up on the hill. Some are saying that moves such as BJ, or bringing in old alum like Morgan Scalley and Sharief Shaw to coach is an effort by Coach Whit to an establish a sort of "We Are Utah" type of brand that is associated with the football program. A program ran for Utes, by Utes.

A little off topic, but you strike me as such a dork. Are you a Trekkie, Star Wars fanboy, Harry Potter enthusiast or anything else like that? Not that there's anything wrong with that stuff, I just want to see if you fit the stereotype that I've subconciously assigned to you.

No, none of those, but I have some pretty strange pictures in my mind about you as well.

Do you drive a really big truck, so big that sometimes you wish you could bring out a step stool to climb into it if it wouldn't embarrass you so much?
Do you still wear your high school letterman jacket?
I picture you as a slightly cooler version of one of the Butabi brothers, maybe with a hint of Uncle Rico in there.

Let's never meet in person.
Sometimes the imagination is much more fun than reality.

BTW, I only have only a small disagreement with the rest of your post. Other than your feelings toward the Heaps saga and your dislike of Bronco, I think I actually agree with what you said.

You could be right. If fans can't hold on to the mascot, logo, or name at least they can have former players to remind them this is the team they rooted for in yesteryear.

I don't think Whit settled on Brian Johnson, I think it shows how much he believes in him. Coach Whit promotes Utah as a family and it's not something he takes lightly. He's been cultivating it for the last few years. During this last recruiting class every single recruit pretty much mentioned the unity the Utes had between players and coaches. If he were to hire an OC out side the program that person would more likely than not request to bring in his own coaches. That's just as big a risk as hiring a young inexperienced coach. In hiring outside the program and bringing in all new offensive coaches could change a big advantage and recruiting tool for Coach Whit and Utah. I was shocked that Brian Johnson was hired because it never crossed my mind due to experience. I think it's a risky move for sure but it has a lot more positives than negatives.

Spazz, I'm really bummed out that you're not fitting into the stereotype I've pegged you with, but I appreciate the honest answers. As far your perception:

Do you drive a really big truck, so big that sometimes you wish you could bring out a step stool to climb into it if it wouldn't embarrass you so much?

I actually don't own any type of truck, let alone a a lifted one.

Do you still wear your high school letterman jacket?

Nope. Packed away in storage somewhere.

I picture you as a slightly cooler version of one of the Butabi brothers, maybe with a hint of Uncle Rico in there.

I didn't even know who the Butabi brothers were, so I googled them. I hated those charachters. You're way off with them and Uncle Rico but you shattered my reality, so I at least hope you're a little let down.

Let's never meet in person.

I agree that we should avoid meeting at all costs, but if we do I'm going to make sure and wear my letterman jacket.

I may have been wrong about you being a Trekkie, etc. but something deep in my soul tells me to trust my feeling that you're a nerd. My instincts can't be that wrong.

FWIW, I am a big fan of pretty much all of the "nerdy" things listed, minus Star Trek. That was a little before my time. I am, however, semi-fluent in Elvish.

Nerds calling each other out. Good stuff.

Did you and Salty have your weightlifting comp yet?

My guess, having never met a single soul on Jazzfanz, is that the BYU fans on this board would totally dominate the Utah fans in any athletic endeavor.
