Burks 4 year $42 million extension!

The DL hate is pretty funny. The biggest problem with the current state of this organization is the result of treading water for 2.5 years. It takes time to turn a franchise in a new direction and to take the reins of power.... By the time he'd done that, the rookie contracts were over, and decisions had to be made. What's Lindsey supposed to do if not work with what he has? Hire a developmentally oriented coach? Trade Kanter!??? I like that last decision best, Linds. Hi-five.

What has DL done to improve the quality of this team or bring in value? He's now overpaid for two players in a row, and missed out on some good stuff in free agency.

DeRozan didn't hit threes when he signed a similar contract (and that was without a looming cap increase incoming). He exploded after his contract-- and now his contract (which was once considered a disaster) is one of the best for an all-star SG in the league.

Funny what the growth of a young player will do. Way too much negativity for this deal.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. Not a horrible contract since most were expecting around 8m even before the TV deal, but it makes his contract more difficult to unload if the Jazz try to pool assets to trade for an all-star. Also, along with Hayward and Favors, we have a large chunk of the cap tied up on nice, but ultimately complimentary, players.

I don't know. We'll see.

Just to add..... burks shot a lot better than derozan from the 3 and from the field overall last year already.

Good post though

Percentage don't mean **** when you're making 0.8 a game. Might as well be 60% from 3-- still wouldn't matter.

Also, Burks has worked on and improved his game every year, has a good attitude (never heard him bitch, or heard anyone say anything bad about him within the orginization, never had issues on twitter, etc), is very durable (I think he only missed like 4 games in the years due to injury)

Just wanted to quote this for more visibility. I think these are all important points.

Personally, I'm happy with the extension. I think there's a solid chance Burks will blow up this season, and if we were planning on keeping Burks I have little doubt that we would end up paying more for him if we waited to match an offer.

I'm not over-the-moon about the job he's done. But, as I said, he wasn't given the keys on day one. I think he has the assets to pull of a trade. That's what I want to see.

But the point of this thread is the Burks extension, and I think he'll earn that check.

Trevor Ariza makes less than Burks.

I've appreciated you being a provocative voice of reason on the knee-jerk Corbin evaluations, but:

Burks doesn't get a raise for another year. Ariza never scored in double figures until he was 24. Burks is 23. Still plenty of time for Burks to grow into his contract.

I've mentioned consequences for the water treading this organization has done. This is the #1 bad consequence, IMO. We've waited until the end of rookie-scale deals before making a trade. There should have been some packaging and trading before now.

Off the top of my head;

Snyder, Gobert, fleshing out our scouting.

DL has been around 2 years now but only started calling the shots last year.

Does anyone think he wouldn't have gotten a larger offer next summer from another team? Of course he would have. This was the price needed to lock him in now and I'm OK with it.

We have to hope someone eventually breaks out though, otherwise we aren't ever going to be a contender with this core. The players who still have some breakout star potential are probably Burks and Exum, so I'm happy with this signing.

I like it.

I think its a fair deal all things considered. Alec has improved every season and looks like he pay have finally added a 3 point shot. If thats the case he is an extremely dangerous offensive player. I think this season he will prove its a fair deal, and he for sure has the potential to make this a good deal for the Jazz.

Comparing him to guys like Ariza is stupid. Ariza would not have signed here for what he did in Houston, even if we offered a lot more he would not have come here. We are not going to get free agent steals for already proven players, we just aren't.
