Having no point guard was rough for the first few games until Coach Rose decided he had to play a point instead of a shooting guard at point guard.

The team looks like it is rounding into form and will get tested Friday in Chicago against Nevada and Saturday probably against Wisconsin.

EDIT:Fixed grammar errors.

They have started out the season slow, but I like the way things are heading. I like that they are getting their shooting touch against these weak teams. Now lets see what they can do against some better teams. If Rogers can still get his shot off against quicker, better defenders that would be awesome. If Abouo can still be as effective as he has been that will be great. Davies has been off and on, I would like to see more consistency from him. I like what Hartsock has been able to do around the basket, and with his back to the basket. I also like Winder, and think he should get the start at PG. I love Harrison off the bench, and think he brings a lot of fire and athleticism to the group. I hope his shooting touch improves as he calms down a bit as things start to roll.
Hartsock, Abouo, and Rogers are shooting 60%, Davies, Winder, Sharp, and Austin are shooting 50% or better. I expect that to change as the competition level increases.
I like what I am seeing in the 3 point shots mainly from Abouo, Rogers, Winder, Harrison, and Hartsock. It's early, but 7 players are shooting 40% or better, I should only count 5 because two of them are 1-1.

Abouo is pulling down 8.8 rebounds a game, and he has been passing very well. I love what he brings to the team.
Davies and Zylstra have been turning the ball over a ton, I would love to see better decision making from both of them. Actually I would rather have an actual PG playing the point and have Zylstra play the 2 off the bench. I thought Davies would come into the year prepared, and killing it, but so far I have been a bit disappointed. He shows flashes of brilliance, but his consistency is lacking.

I think the Cougars will be better than people expect this year, and too much emphasis was put on the loss of Jimmer. They will play more as a team, and will spread the ball around more which will make the team much more difficult to predict and defend.

There, that's my 2 cents.

BYU is not very good right now. They are a team full of role players that will win a lot of games against bad or mediocre teams because they are well coached. Davies was supposed to be the best player, the leading scorer, the one guy who was better than just an average role player, and that hasn't happened yet. BYU either needs that from Davies or Carlino has to be lights out as a frosh. If neither of those things happen BYU will be fortunate to make the NIT. If both of those things happen - unlikely as that may be - they should win a game in the NCAAs.

The next few weeks will certainly be telling. Most interesting to me will be to see whether Cusik or Winder have what it takes to play decent ball against better teams or if they become TO machines against better pressure. They have been solid enough to make me encouraged that we could actually go two deep at that spot without me wanting to turn the game off when Carlino is forced out of games in the future.

Hartsock is looking like The Dream on some of his post moves these days. I might try and make him the go to guy if I were Rose. Davies is solid, but he can clearly be countered by doubles/different matchups as he is reacting way too slowly to those right now. But even if nobody ultimately separates as a go to guy, I think if Carlino can put up 10 +, 15+/game, that balance would be pretty hard to beat.

Lol. Getting neg repped because people can't take a joke. Obviously Mormons don't pray to Joseph Smith.

What did you think was going to happen?

Oh, thanks for neg repping me back because I neg repped you for your tasteless comment, dude.

(It's nothing personal, anti-LDS false crap spreads like wild fire and no, it's not obvious Mormons don't pray to JS, there's lots of people who actually believe that because they read stuff like your previous post)

Every time I have neg repped you for something, you have always responded with a neg rep back to me. It seemed fitting.

Anyways, back to basketball.

The Cougs beat an ok Nevada team. Lets see if they can keep up the shooting percentages against a good Wisconsin team, assuming Wisconsin wins. I have a feeling if we play Wisc, we will need some of our backup bigs to help out because of foul trouble to Davies, and maybe Hartsock.
Abouo, and Hartsock looked great. Winder looked pretty good, and is getting better. I think BYU will have a good year again.

That Mitch Richmond guy on BYU is playing out of his mind. I swear it seemed like just yesterday when he was bricking 3's off the side of the backboard. I suspect he'll come back down to earth shortly, but hopefully that's where the depth will kick in and we won't even notice when he is having bad shooting nights.

Ugly second half vs Wisconsin. Couldn't hit a 3 to save their lives. The only player to really stand his own was Hartsock. 18 pts 6 boards 4 blocks.
Everyone else was meh. They got hurt on their help defense. When a guy would go help, his guy would be open and nail the shot. Mostly the same guy. 7-10 from downtown. I give them a bit of a pass because Wisconsin is really good defensively and has been holding teams to under 40, but I can't give them a full pass because their own defense failed them. Wisconsin shot over 50% from the field and from downtown.

That's my update, not like anyone cares.

I think what Seattle was talking about above really hurt them. They had multiple chances to put distance between them and Wisconsin in that second half but Davies couldn't hit a couple of chippys and after that point that kid on Wisconsin went nuts from 3 point land. Davies is really frustrating because he could easily be Jason Thompson if was a little more aggressive and just used the face up game more and moved a little quicker the second he gets a touch.

They have to find someone that can get them a tough bucket when they need it. Although the fact that they didn't shut completely down when they got down double digits early and made a comeback is somewhat encouraging.

No Jimmer = No BYU Basketball

BYU B-ball is now forever dead. It has been touched by The Jimmer, and now is at an end.

Just hope nothing/no one else has been touched by The Jimmer....we don't need anymore [Insert College] Controversies.

BYU beat Oregon on Saturday by 20 ish.
It will be interesting to see how good Oregon is supposed to be this year.

It is going to take time for this team to figure out what to do against good defensive teams. Davies could the answer but gets pushed off his spots too easily. Winder improves every game as you would expect for a freshman.

BYU has Weber St and Utah this week. I expect they will be able to handle Weber St at home. And Utah is dreadful this year.

A talented and currently ranked Baylor comes to town after that. Hopefully Carlino will be able to give us a big boost in his first game.
