From the Provo Daily Herald:

About a dozen Brigham Young University students were severely burned late Saturday night or early Sunday morning after playing with gasoline and explosives near a mine shaft.

Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon said that the students were in the Tintic mining district near mile marker 143 on State Route 6 when the accident happened. He said it was between Elberta and Eureka. He reported that they were dropping homemade gas bombs down a deep mine shaft when they accidentally spilled and ignited a cooler filled with fuel.

"Somebody panicked, the cooler fell over, and a series of flames ... caught the side of the mine shaft on fire," Cannon said.

Honor Code violation?

I had a few dumbass friends that did that.

Not only is it probably illegal/trespassing, but I thought it was dangerous.

I think what they used to do was pour gas in bottles and drop them down. they'd then feel the explosion/watch the fire.

I personally contribute this odd behavior to Utah not having an ocean. If we had a real ocean (instead of a stinky salty lake), people could surf instead of dropping bombs down old mine shafts.

The reason they did it is because the Holy Ghost goes to bed at midnight.

I did this one time, probably about 5 years ago. I would also like to add I was sexually frustrated at the time too.
