BYU to the Big 12 discussion???

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see Ute fans in here piling on Reno Mahe when he got arrested for stealing thousands of dollars worth of gas. Salty's post was the first I've seen it brought up but I think it was more than fair considering how Trout was passing judgement on some young men based off of a pic. And people wonder why BYU and some of it's fans are hated for their holier than thou attitude.

And for what it's worth Trout and Conan are by no means typical of the BYU fans I've known. Just like Salty isn't typical of the Utah fans I've known.

Not really any information here, but Holmoe finally made a statement.

https://www.deseretnews.com/article...een-invited-to-Big-12-process-is-ongoing.html
"We appreciate that we've been able to do this privately and confidentially and in a manner that was not played outside the confidences of our discussions. It's time to say a couple of things," said Holmoe.

"First, were we invited to the Big 12? No, we have not been invited. A good follow-up is because some have stated we have rejected an offer from the Big 12, obviously you cannot reject that offer — that goes without saying."

Holmoe said the "process," which he would not elaborate on, is "ongoing" and he refused to say how close Big 12 membership was for BYU. Asked if BYU has come close to being invited, he said it is hard to say. "It is an internal matter. It came close for TCU and you saw how quick that happened and how quick things changed on the landscape of college football."

Holmoe said BYU would do its very best to keep "being involved in the process" as things change, as they did with TCU and the Big 12 and what happened Friday.

...

"It is important to know we plan on doing the very best we can for BYU," he said. "We are very competitive. BYU has played football for a long time and been competitive and done very well. We have no intentions of not being with the big boys.

The only problem I have with that is that he is not going to say they had an offer if they did/do. BYU will have an offer once they accept, never until then. That seems like the PR game. It is a positive that he didn't say anything about the process being over and in fact was pretty much implying that playing with the big boys in a conference is their preference. Very positive. If he is being truthful, that would also mean most of the media "reports" were bunk.

Let's try this again.....

Anybody care for some last minute conference/independence smack before BYU joins the best current football conference in America?

They are going to join the SEC? If you still mean the big12 then you mean the 4th best Football conference in america.

I wasn't asking for homer conference rankings. Every source that does conference rankings this year has them 1 or a close 2, and they were #1 when I wrote that the first time in this topic. A & M going does nothing. Missouri going does nothing. Those are average football programs.

As of today, the Big 12 is rated as the top conference by Sagarin, https://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc11.htm

Here are his top 10 conferences:

Code:
CONFERENCE CENTRAL MEAN SIMPLE AVERAGE TEAMS WIN50%

   1 BIG 12 (A) = 82.78 82.75 ( 1) 10 82.81 ( 1)
   2 SOUTHEASTERN (A) = 80.48 80.94 ( 2) 12 80.42 ( 2)
   3 BIG TEN (A) = 75.43 74.76 ( 3) 12 75.02 ( 3)
   4 PAC-12 (A) = 74.47 74.60 ( 4) 12 74.51 ( 4)
   5 ATLANTIC COAST (A) = 73.35 73.39 ( 5) 12 73.33 ( 5)
   6 BIG EAST (A) = 72.05 72.34 ( 6) 8 72.24 ( 6)
   7 I-A INDEPENDENTS (A) = 69.00 69.00 ( 7) 4 69.00 ( 7)
   8 MOUNTAIN WEST (A) = 65.18 65.90 ( 8) 8 65.00 ( 8)
   9 CONFERENCE USA (A) = 63.98 63.25 ( 9) 12 63.82 ( 9)
  10 WESTERN ATHLETIC (A) = 62.80 62.77 ( 10) 8 62.73 ( 10)

Now as to whether BYU will get the invite, I don't know. But the Big 12 is certainly a very good conference right now.

P.S. It *is* kind of funny that there are 10 teams in the Big 12, and 12 teams in the Big 10, isn't it? That just looks wrong in my table. :-)

Those rankings are neat. Here's the rankings I use: The SEC has won the last 5 national titles and in many of those years, the SEC #2 was probably the 2nd or 3rd best team in the country.

Until another conference can equal that streak, it's the SEC by a landslide IMO.

BYU to the Big 12 dealt another blow. From ESPN:

The Big 12 has told West Virginia it will be accepted into the conference pending formal approval, which could happen as soon as later Tuesday, a Big 12 source said.

Earlier Tuesday, multiple media reports said that West Virginia was headed from the Big East to the Big 12.

West Virginia will be accepted into the conference as a replacement for Missouri, which the conference believes is departing for the SEC. However, according to the source, West Virginia's acceptance into the Big 12 is not contingent on Missouri leaving.

BYU is quickly running out of options. Also have to wonder if this will be the final blow to the Big East. If it is, BYU should get in Boise's ear ASAP and talk about doing something with the remains of the Big East and the service acadamies. It would certainly be better than independence IMO.

I'm pretty sure BYU to the Big 12 was dead a looooonnnnnnnggggggggggggg time ago.

Those in power demanded that BYU get their ESPN tv time and/or maintain rights to the games on BYU TV.

BYU to the Big 12 was soooooo September.

Ya, I don't get that. BYU is going to a conference on their terms. They are not like other schools I know who'll just take the first offer they get and be happy they even got an invite.

If BYU would bend on their demands they could go most anywhere and long ago. But they won't so conferences are leary of adding them. I don't blame those conferences they are being smart.

If Missouri leaves, the Big 12 will still have to add another team for the year between when WV can join and Missouri leaves because of the Big East's 27 month rule... am I right?
At this point I really don't care either way, it would be nice, but I am not getting my hopes up.

My point, if the Big 12 needs a team to have 10 to keep their TV deal, they will have to pull in BYU or pull in some team from a conference not named Big East.
