Can Exum be fixed?

i saw his dad play a lot .. he was way thicker in his mid 20's than when he was at college. The likelihood is that he'll fill out a bit more. He also was considered in a similar category to Hayward as far as how his body reacted to training.
He's not great now but i still think he'll be really good by 25-26

Agreed. Most men don't even hit their full shoulder growth until their early 20s. He'll fill out.
 
My main issue with Exum and the Jazz is that Quin seems to really distrust him. If Quin isn't sold on Exum then it just creates a situation where he's always going to be looking over his shoulder and not playing free. That's a really bad way to develop a player. Early on Quin was really developmentally minded as in giving guys minutes and letting them play through mistakes. But since last season he's kind of switched to a more win-now strategy for the most part (the exception is Mitchell which makes sense, and guys like O'neale who fit a certain archetype of being physical defenders). Maybe that's just Exum's bad luck that he got injured during the important season where he would have probably had the most chance to learn on the court in games that weren't incredibly meaningful yet. Maybe he can't recover from that with the makeup of the team now and needs to move on.

Either way this last stretch where Quin has slowly taken away his playing time and Exum's confidence has once again seemingly diminished just makes me hesitant to want the Jazz to re-sign him. Not because I don't believe that Exum could develop, but more because I don't get the feeling that Quin likes him as a player on this squad. Even when he plays him he still spends way too many possessions bringing the ball up the floor (maybe the worst part of his game) and then passing off and standing in the corner. This isn't Exum calling the "go stand in the corner" play because he's passive either. This is Quin calling plays that essentially make Exum a spot up shooter (maybe his other worst attribute). When he has the ball in his hands either on the break or in the half court he is a useful tool. He turns it over some but creates a lot of open looks in PnR and iso-blender plays.

I don't have a ton of confidence in Quin and Dante meshing at this point. If they do sign him I guess we hope for the best. A big part of that would be Dante really making major strides to gain Quin's confidence. He has to do that without ever truly having a consistent in-game offensive role which is a tall task.

Snyder and Exum seem to get along great from every interview I have heard. Before the season and injury Snyder talked more about Exum than any other player. He consistently says he really likes Exum. He thinks he has tons of potential. Snyder always says he pushes Exum harder than anyone else and expects more from him because he thinks he can handle it and it will get him to the next level.

Snyder and DL see huge potential in Exum and like him. I would be shocked not to see him next year unless it's part of a trade.

Snyder shouldn't trust Exum right now. If Exum is struggling in a game pull him and put in a vet. If Exum is doing well ride him for a bit until the starters are rested. That's seems to be what Snyder is doing. Exum is very young and especially experience wise. This is the playoffs, not a time to experiment.

I think Quinn has given Ex plenty of room just as he has with Burks. At some point you have to do what you are asked to do and you have to help win games. I also don't sense at all that there is any friction between Ex and the coaches or front office. In my view they have done a lot to develop him and continue to give him chances. I guess we will see when it comes contract time. For sure the injury part of the equation has been huge.
 
Yep, at least from the outside looking in, there doesn't seem to be any friction between Ex and the coaches. I even saw Quin and Ex have a good chuckle after one of his turnovers against the Rockets.

We've all said a lot about Dante's development. Some of us have said that at times Quin may have made a mistake in playing Shelvin over him, and there's also the fact that Dante himself isn't blameless for sure. I think both of those are true up to a point.

The biggest factor is of corse missing almost 2 full seasons, and that is the issue that has hurt the most.

I'm a man of faith who believes that everything happens for a reason. I choose to believe that Exum will become a very good player. I also choose to believe that had Exum started to reach his potential sooner, we might not have traded for Rubio or maybe even drafted Donovan Mitchell. If we play our cards right and have faith and have patience, we might end up having one of the best backcourts in the entire NBA very, very soon.
 
I've been hard on Danté lately, wow he was awesome tonight. That defense was as close to perfect against Harden as you'll get, big moments when he hit his 3's too.

I think Quin rotated him, Royce and Neto perfectly tonight to manage the fouls, really happy for Ex.

At one stage in the second half, CP3 was screening Dante on every possession just to get Mitchell to switch onto Harden.
 
Harden just read this whole thread he’s been google searching “ how to fix a Dante Exum problem” all night.

This thread was the only result.

Exum's defense on Harden was so good that the Rockets were doing everything they could to get the Jazz to switch Exum off of Harden.
