What's new

can somebody explain to me why you can't say retarded?

My only problem with the "n-word" is that it is used so freely among blacks. If it is so offensive and they really didn't want to hear that word then shouldn't they stop saying it?

Back to the topic. True story. My brother was on a date when he said, "That is retarded". His date (who happened to be a special ed teacher) got all bent out of shape and said, "I would rather hear the f-word than retarded". So my brother said, "Okay, that is ****ing retarded". That was the end of that date.

To clarify, I have no problem with people saying "retard" but if someone asked me not to say it I would try not to.

Also interesting is that college recruiters are asking for Facebook logins for recruits. They look at a lot of stuff but the number one red flag word is the n word. You use that and you're gone.

That reminds me of a a discussion I had with my parents when I was 7. They said they knew that my freinds and I used swear words. They said that was fine for my friends and I while we were together. They said as long as I did not swear in front of people who would be offended by it I was basically good to go.

Makes sense to me.

Probably the same reason you can't jerk off in the bathroom on an airplane... Thanks a lot Bin Laden.

I've never seen that rule posted? Nobody ever tells me these things until its too late. But on a more serious note, would you still qualify as being a member of the mile high club?

I'd say no. That's akin to saying you've had sex with a supermodel just because you jacked off to her picture. It doesn't work that way.

The only problem I can see with that plan is that becomes habit and could more easily slip out in an inappropriate situation.

I thought this was an interesting breakdown of how dumb someone has to be for each classification within "retardation":
https://www.assessmentpsychology.com/iqclassifications.htm

"Mental deficiency used to be divided into the following sub-classifications, but these labels began to be abused by the public and are now largely obsolete: Borderline Deficiency (IQ 70-80), Moron (IQ 50-69), Imbecile (IQ 20-49) and Idiot (below 20). Mental deficiency is now generally called mental retardation."

Maybe we should rethink what we call people. When we call someone a moron, maybe we are not being as harsh as we originally meant to be. "Go big or go home!"

As I understand it, the word RETARD, as a noun, is pure slang. A retarded person is not clinically defined as a RETARD. Using it as a noun is derogatory, and I can't think of a context in which it isn't.

However, using the word RETARDED is quite different, IMO. It is used with some frequency in many different areas outside of human mental health.

I find calling a person a "retard" objectionable, but calling a concept or an idea "retarded", not so much.
