Cavs and Celtics Battling for Butler

Can somebody find me a link where it is 100% certain that Zeller's $8 million for next year is not guaranteed? I've seen sites saying it is and others saying it isn't. I want to see an article recently talking about it or the article when he signed it.

Try «Tyler Zeller unguaranteed» in Google and the first with results will give you links to both a report on the contract and to basketball refernce who say that his team option date is July 2nd.

Perfect. Thanks. Damn Ainge is a genius.

Anytime that the Jazz sign a mid-level free agent, they should include an extra non-guaranteed year to increase the team's options for trades.

No point anymore as the new CBA only counts guaranteed salary for salary matching purposes for all contracts signed after the new CBA goes into effect.

Nevermind then. Didn't know that. Actually probably a good thing that they closed that loophole.

It still is a valuable option that should be tacked onto contracts... in case the player out plays his current deal.

In cases like these there are only the right and the wrong way of looking at things. In this case you are wrong. Zeller`s salary for cap purposes is 0 next season. He is unguaranteed and they have to wave him to make max cap space. That they can use him as a salary filler in a trade with his unguaranteed salary does not alter this at all. If they trade Zeller, Bradley and #3 for Butler, they are sending out just over $14 million in 2017/18-salary and taking back 18,7.
I didn't know Zeller was non guaranteed. But they will still have room for a max player. Bringing players from overseas they have not signed yet but hold the rights to don't count against the cap until they sign them. They can do that after signing a max player.

All reports are that is what Ainge is setting up for so I assume his numbers are right and every break down shows they have room. They should be right around 70 million.

Man, why do you keep on coming back with false assumptions when you in the time you have used to write this easily could have googled the facts? No, the drafted players from overseas count against the cap. The only way to undo this is to make them commit to not coming over this season at all. The cap hold disappears, but is replaced by a roster hold of just over $800k.

Again - there is no way for the Celtics to trade for Butler and keep the above mentioned players while creating max cap space. If you still won`t believe, try using google - it`s a neat little tool that will provide you with links to resources like this one:

That article shows they can do it if they get rid of Bradley, which is assumed.

Also googling Hayward and Butler to the Celtics there are dozens or more articles showing the break down of Boston Easily getting the room to do it. As I said origingally, yes they will have to fill out their roster with some vet min contracts but that is no bid deal if you have 4 all-stars. Guerschon Yabusele is not coming over this year. They can easily trade away Zizic or get him to come over later as well.

I am not sure how you see that they cant get room for a Max player.

Is what they are committed to 70.54 Million. They can sign Hayward for a max deal at 30.3 Million and put them at 100.84. They can then fill out the roster with min contracts.

They can make room for Hayward and then trade for Butler, but it has to happen in that order. If they trade for Butler first, they have to move way too many pieces to make it worth it.

The news that the Cap is only rising to $99 million is extremely good news for us. If the Celtics want to create max cap space now, they have to agree to not bring over Zizic and Yabousele until next year and trade both Jackson and Rozier in addition to Bradley and #3 or Brown. Hayward would be their starting PF with Horford @ C and those two would be the only two front court players on the team before they use their MLE and sign minimum free agents. Will Gordon really choose this instead of playing with Gobert?

Boston could still get both. If Hayward signs, then they could offer some ridiculous deal to Chicago in July. They could send Brown, Bradley and a ton of their war chest of draft picks in upcoming drafts. Chicago would probably prefer a pick from this draft, but they also might hit a logjam in free agent pursuits and just say f it.
