What's new

Chad Ford on ESPN 700 with Keith Stubbs today (6/11/14)

So if you don't see any team trading down, how do the Jazz position themselves for a consensus top-3 (Wiggins, Parker, Embiid?).
By many accounts, including Lindsey, Exum isn't in that top tier.

I don't think he is either, but I also don't think that teams in the top-3 love Parker but will draft him because they know someone will come calling and they still may get the guy they wanted more and sweeteners on top of it. So you grab the guy that they might actually like more and talk. Exum may build ground to discuss something like what happened last year with Minnesota (from what I understand, the Jazz acquired Burke through having a deal already in place where Minnesota picked Burke then traded down for #14 and #21). If Philly gets Parker and isn't in love with him? If Orlando is just head-over-heels about Smart or Vonleh? THE TABLE IS SET.

Yeah it probably is. In a 50 game season. Can you tell us your thoughts on exum?

nah in 50 game season that group is worth 20 wins.
Can you tell me your thoughts on Tzikitishvili? Yi? Milicic? Vesely? Byombo?... same applies to Exum.

Look at the NBA Finals, we have Boris Diaw and Rachad Lewis playing the PF.. those guys shoot 3's on the regular and Favors will have a tough time chasing them down.

The classic response is that Favors dominate the boards to neutralize their advantage.

If we get a better player than Favors to play PF, we can move Favors to center. Otherwise, we are drafting someone to play Favor's preferred spot, ticking off the best player on our team in the process. How sure are we about Vonleh?

dumb statement i know. so is your statement.

no one knows what exums career will be like. he might suck, he might be great, or he might be average

Though Parker and Ginobili played professionally in Europe before they entered the NBA.

Exum's situation is closer to Giannis Antetokounmpo's. Giannis was even more of an unknown. Exum is has shown some basketball skills in real games. He is a huge risk. But Giannis is turning into a steal. That might still in GM's minds around the league.

You didn't tell us your thoughts on exum. And every single one of the players you named were guys that were drafted because they were big guys perceived to have skill. Exum is a guard who is supposedly lightning quick with a decent shot. The comparisons are not even at all alike.

Again, tell us why you don't like exum. And when you tell us why you don't like exum, tell us what is crappy about Derrick rose, Westbrook, mcw, penny hardaway, young Kobe, and any other tall, quick combo guard.

I told more about Exum than any other player, go reread my posts. Players you mentioned are way superior to Exum when it comes to athleticism. Don't be silly putting Exum' name with Westbrook and D.Rose... seriously watch the tape he is a turtle compared to cheetah with these guys. He has no lift or body strength either to finish through contact in NBA either. Plus Westbrook and D.Rose had way more experience and exposure before draft.
You talk about decent shot... my oh my... Exum sucks at shooting. Big time. 10-23 FT in two medal games where his team needed him the most and he failed badly. 5-17 3 pts = decent shooting? Another game I found on youtube he shot 4-15 from 3pt in one game! He is poor shooting volume chucker who will be absolutely negated in NBA by real defenses. Which exactly what happened even when he faced team USA in U19. Smart, Gordon and company send him hiding to bench after 11 min. Dude had 4 turnovers to 0 assists in 11 minutes!

Sure if he is drafted in 20's or 50s... I don't mind. Not in top 5. Exum's draft position is crazy overrated. Get him at 23, stash him in Europe for 2 years than see if it was worth taking him.

Giannis is a decent comparison simply because there's so much of an unknown factor with Exum. I personally am not a huge fan of his. I'd love him as an upside draft and stash pick in the back end of the lotto, but certainly not at 5. The big thing for me is that for all the potential and hype, he hasn't done a single thing at a high level. Wiggins, Embiid, Parker, Gordon, Smart and even Randle have shown that they could perform at a high level in college against quality opponents. Vonleh wasn't as successful, but still performed well and has that same level of upside. Saric has been a solid pro in Europe for years.

IMO, all of them are better options than Exum. He's probably the player I'd be least excited about them drafting.

My wish list.
1. Trade the pick. Up preferably. Or with other assets for an Allstar
2. Exum
3. Vonleh
4. Smart
5. Gordon
