What's new

Chess Match Thread

OK. . . . so the appeal of the Rook exchange depended on some stupidity on the part of OB, a bad bet most days.

In other moves I had considered before issuing that invitation, there were also some pretty tortuous issues that had to be gotten just right in order for me to win, as well.

Still this last move may not have been my best move. In general principles, having a pair of mobile pieces keeps hope alive a little better, and in this case I achieved no clear path to a win, and may have given OB one.

But I have still not gone over all the contingencies, not by a long shot. All I can say right now is that I'm questioning the trade. I can give OB a chance to decline if he wishes though. . . .

So I have been conscripted into the move to the new house. . . . .

I might be until Monday night thinking about this.

OK, the issue is what moves can be forced in the ensuing game. The result of the rook trade actually depends upon the position of the surviving pieces. What I had not considered well enough is the somewhat unnatural choice of King moves OB could make to control the center. Natural enough to go chasing along with the passed pawn, but that would have lost the game, imo.

If I take OB's Rook right now, there is a way he can force things on to a victory.

So whether he sees that or not is not going to be a gamble I will take. I therefore move my King to the center of the fight.

So, I'm back on the road, just thinking about this.

I didn't see any forced line of play where I was sure to win, just some where it was possible.

As things appear now, I may concede if I see a way OB can force a victory.

With me the interest in this game is the exercise of my mind. As with other topics, OB has proven a worthwhile contender.

If you take on move 45, I saw myself queening while your pawn was still on g3 and your king on h4 (diverting my bishop to d1 got me the extra moves i needed for that). Then I can get my queen to g1 before you have both pawn and king on the 7th rank, and hold you off until I can bring my king over.

However, I don't see where this is better for you. Getting your king to the d file accomplishes the same delay.

I am a confirmed unrealistic dreamer. I thought maybe I could talk you outta doing the trade without losing my Bishop as the cost.

Well, we definitely still have some different views even of this relatively simple, objective reality.

Kxd4, or KxR, whatever.

Well, in my view, my chances to actually win died with the Rook exchange. But even with the Rook it was pretty hard to see how I could actually force you into a position where my winning was possible. I'll study this out again and get back later this afternoon. I have some business to attend to.

Thanks for starting the game, One Brow. Interesting that d4 is now played more often than e4. Back when Kasparov was playing it seems like e4 was the much more popular move.

From what I understand, there was a period of 4 years or so where the Petrov earned close to 50%, so people gravitated away from e4 directly. However, the Petrov has not been performing as well lately, so e4 will probably come back.

Against e4 I'm more decisive and just play the Sicilian. With d4 I try different openings so here I'll play g6 to keep my options flexible.
