China Report

I have a friend who's married to a pretty smart doctor, who happens to be Chinese. Well, and a lot of other acquaintances from Asia. Yesterday, I visited with the doctor one for a few hours, happening to catch the luck of the moment.

So I ask questions like this, open ended and respectfully: "What would you tell me if you really intended to help me understand what things are like in China today?"

Well, since her parents live in China, but want to come here once in a while for a month or two, and play with their grandkids, it started out with the crazy bureacracy. They are both just as pissed as Hades over that, in regard to both the American and Chinese departments concerned. I was trying to be respectful, so I didn't ask them if they had paid the required bribes. They did say they had tried to get Jon Huntsman to help them out, and that he had written a letter for them. . . . with apparently no favorable results.

She noted that when Obama went to China he included a remark on the situation, and got applause, saying he was going to open the doors in the United States for Chinese tourism. Millions of Chinese millionaires today want to just come to LA, go to disneyland, and then ride the bus to Vegas. They hate the anti-terrorist airline crap, and literally refuse to come here just for that. Harry Reid wants to build a MagLev train from LA to Vegas. Such a train would make LA/Vegas THE destination for Chinese tourists. She says Chinese gamblers don't flinch with huge stakes and binges, and will gamble for all they're worth.

She said that the Chinese millionaires are all buying Buicks, and are the reason for the huge GM profits currently.

She says that the one-child policy has been relaxed a little. If you live in a rural area, it's a two-child policy now. And exceptions are being granted to folks who can afford two.

She says that because the policy took effect in the late seventies and that it has created a huge excess of men in the marriageable age, who are desperate now to marry someone. Families with one male child are now willing to pay huge fortunes to smugglers who can get a bride smuggled in for their son. Right now, the main source of smuggled brides is North Korea, where there are huge numbers of women who consider the chance to both get out of the country, and marry prosperously, to die for.

She also says that we( me and my wife) are just not going about things the right way. If we want to adopt a chinese kid, we can do it, but should not go about it the regular way. We just need an inside track, or chinese facilitator, instead of an American one. Kinda scary, though, laying out a bunch of money without recourse.

She says the Chinese govt is not going to rock the boat, geopolitically. Says the leaders recognise their common cause with the US market for their business, and will not kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. Doesn't mean they don't think we're terminally stupid, does mean they(The Chinese business class) would even favor Ron Paul as President, on his economic policies. They don't call him "Austrian School", but "Confucian School" in economics.

I wonder if the Chinese inclination to Vegas will wane as Macau "sexes up". Because Macau used to be a place where local Chinese had no idea that massage parlors handed out sex like it was mints. Now, it's much more open and the hotels and such are starting to advertise that as being part of the whole Macau experience. Strip clubs are opening etc. And of course, Macau is many times bigger and better than Vegas already for just gambling. Although, there is always something to be said for getting away and seeing new places, so that will never lose its appeal and certainly more Chinese are having money. And Vegas is more varied.

Are you really thinking of adopting a Chinese kid? That's kind of the route I want to go too. Have a gaggle of self created babies with whomever I marry and then adopt a few on top of that. The chances that at least one of those ends up being Chinese seems likely even though I'm years away from that point.

adoption looks impossible, and the window for that is closing.

I used to think Bali was Hell enough for the whole world. Nothing like Asia for anonymity and anything goes. And every Asian country has its own mob, and slave trade. Chinese dynasties have always had an element of fiction, because nobody is going to speak the evil they know, and warlords are a dime a dozen, and overt rule has always been countered by covert operations virtually universally. Like Viet Nam, you can claim to be the superpower of the world, and arm your troops convincingly, and march into any village and "pacify" it with some kind of demonstration of power, being "honored" with ingratiating smiles and declarations of gratitude, but unless you can just camp there, and everywhere, everything is different when you aren't "there".

That's why McArthur, the "old Asia hand", said never get involved in a land war in Asia, and focused on controlling the air space and shipping. Only in the Philippines, where loyalty to American forces could be absolutely relied upon, did he actually "liberate" a nation.

It is said that the Chicom leadership looked at McArthur and judged him arrogant, and therefore vulnerable. Sorta says volumes about how they might miscalculate on us now.

To their credit, the Chinese fought against the British druglord corruption of their land with opium, and in my opinion if the new fascist character of Chinese elites corrodes very much of the the traditional Chinese cultural wisdom, to the extent that the leadership starts up its own "Vegas", they'll never be able to be a world power. Any more than we can really be successful as a nation on the world stage, a real leader, without our traditional moral culture. The rest of the world will just see us as another warlord gang, and resent us like hell, and prove to be absolutely incorrigible and ungovernable so far as we try to impose any influence simply for our own interests.

The Brits, at least, have known they had no chance to rule the world overtly, and have from long ago adopted puppeteer methods and machiavellian principles.

I'll go out on a limb, and just say there will never be both peace and freedom in this world, on any scale, without basic and strong cultural morals, of the peoples' own choosing, and popular wisdom to match. Sex-addicted, power and money -based, and decadent drugged-out, drunkard, self-absorbed indolent peoples will just waste away, dry up on the vine, and die off.

Long live Confucious, Jesus, and Buddha.

Babe on your comment about judging us arrogant and how they'd judge us now...

I see the US like I do my family. Loud, obnoxious, tons of infighting and fists flying. But as someone outside the family messes with any memeber of the family they have a whole ton of pissed of people coming at them.

Fastest way (and most effective imo) to unite the US is have a foreign entity mess with the US.

You pretty much just described America...

unfortunately, it describes a lot of places, and there is no place that isn't getting more like it. I think that's why shock and awe military adventurism doesn't get even more adverse reaction worldwide.

Been watching how kids were militarized in Japan pre-WWII. China isn't doing that, nor is Russia or even Iran. India could never pull it off, and there just aren't the percentages in the whole Arab world of people who would buy into stuff like that.

Newsmax and LIGNET are pumping the war hype for all they're worth, but Americans just aren't in the mood. Not even if the MSM pulls out all the stops and starts howling for war. All this stuff about Iran threatening Israel with annihilation and Israel wanting to do a pre-emptive strike is just the sort of thing that we really just don't care about anymore. Let Israel and Iran do their own war. It'll lead to the collapse of both stupid governments.
