If you listen to the talking heads on any network, the near-universal conclusion is that the collapse of Rick Perry makes a Mitt Romney nomination inevitable. Yes, Cain is surging, and in some polls has actually passed Romney for the lead, but this is dismissed as a flash in the pan that will soon fade due to Cain’s relative lack of money and organization.

I’m sorry, but their calculations, quite honestly, are incorrect.

A more realistic analysis of the available data indicates that Herman Cain is far more likely to rise higher than fall back.

Why would he be in last place again?

Bean, why is this so difficult for you to understand?

Just because Romney needs the GOP evangelical base to win the nomination and the Presidency doesn't necessarily mean that the GOP is only made of evangelicals.

Romney may be popular with repubs and maybe even some demos. Hence, him not being in last place.

But to go to first place and ultimately win the Presidency, he needs the evangelical right. Or hope that Obama continues to really suck (which just might happen).

Who knows?

Back to the original subject, Christie's endorsement won't change many (if any) minds. Use your own logic, had Christie endorsed Perry, think it would have turned many people against Romney? the endorsement is nice for Romney's piggy bank. But it's not this game changer that you want it to be.

I will be pleasantly surprised if Cain wins even one actual primary. I disbelieve enough voters will get past his race to nominate him. The same for Bachman, based on gender. Romney I see winning primaries, but not the nomination.

I still think it will be Perry.

Romney's my guy. I don't care about any of the other issues during this next presidential election, I'm voting for the guy who I think is the best fit to bring this country out of financial ruin and IMO that guy is Romney by a long shot. However, Thriller is 100% correct when he talks about how hard it's going to be for Romney to win the nomination with what he's facing in the south. I honestly feel like this country was more ready to elect a black president than they are to elect a Mormon president.

Not saying I agree with that thinking, but it's a very real issue for Mitt.

If Romney gets the nomination that could be the single most important step for the modern GOP that we've seen in some time. That would effectively disprove that you need to win evangelicals and cater to the extremes of the Tea Party in order to be a viable GOP presidential candidate, neutering much of the power those two groups enjoy.

I fear you are reciting yesterday's conventional wisdom in the face of data that appears to refute it.

Romney has put on his best conservative face for the past 6th months or so, but if anyone believes he's going to all of am sudden abandon everything he's believed for his entire life while he's the president they are crazy. The guy is a legit moderate and if he wins the election you can bet that's the guy who will come out over his first term in office.

I'm no republican, but Romney does seem like he could possibly get congress back and working together because the GOP will back his ideas because of the republican label, and enough democrats will back them because they will be generally left leaningmlike his massachusettes health care plan was.

Romney and Ginrich are by far the best combo of brains and articulation of the bunch. Too bad the chances of either of them being genuine are very low.

If he didn't act like a liberal guy in his personal life he would be doing better.

This is pretty much my thinking and why I'm leaning towards Romney in a straight-up Romney/Obama showdown. A lot of that has to do with how disappointing I've found Obama however.
