Clarkson Likely to Get Extension

This whole tanking theme is just such a stupid discussion because it gets so opinionated.

I trust that DA has a plan, and Hardy knows it. They are still trying to win since they see it as the best course of action.

Instead of telling those professionals who are paid millions and have dozens of other professionals supporting them being wrong, Id rather try and understand where they are headed and why.

We got a stud in a trade where we traded an all-star. I am all for buying low on guys we think could be better in our system. Trading our premium picks like you have suggested is quite the opposite.
How did we get that stuff we traded? Oh we drafted him.

Hitting on picks is so crucial for success in non FA destination markets. You can maneuver through trades and sign a FA here and there… but the vast majority of AS talent will come from the draft.

Remember… to get where we want to go we aren’t just trying to find an all star to pair with Lauri… we are trying to find an all star better than Lauri. As great as he has been does anyone think Lauri is the #1 on a finals team? On a conference finals team? We aren’t just looking for starters… we looking for stars.

Why should we comment on anything then? I mean I was given that exact ****ing line on draft night when we picked Udoka over Bane and Mcdaniels. This was on draft night… I also told everyone that we will sign a vet backup so keep that in mind… got lol’d to high heaven “you know better than a professional?!?!?!? Lolz!!!”

Yes sir… I did.

Now to DA… we don’t know the plan and it’s likely not mapped like a traditional plan… more like a general direction. That direction will firm up based on their actions… not on reports from media. At trade deadline we will see where they stand. Their opportunities are a big part of what direction they go.

Fit matters. That's what the Cavs are now learning the hard way. Mitchell fits, but now... Garland doesn't. And that's something of a problem, as they just gave him the 5 year max and stupidly anointed him the face of the franchise. Garland is quickly becoming the elephant in the room.

I'm not saying they shouldn't have done the trade. Don is much better than Garland. But they're way too similar, and something has to give before long. That will be very uncomfortable for everyone.

Of course, it's not a given that Mitchell even stays in Cleveland once his deal is up, but if the Cavs have become "his" team in the meantime, Garland may not want to look like a plan B after Don bolts. He may ask for a trade too (if he hasn't earlier). At that point the Cavs are ****ed.

So, we definitely shouldn't be hoarding guys like Collins before thinking long and hard how they're going to fit.
lmfao

Garland isnt an ideal fit with Mitchell, but you are being a bit ridiculous here. If they really wanted to, they could trade Garland and get a boatload for him, he is very very good.

We likely wouldn’t have gotten much on top of Garland if they included him in the deal for Donovan.

If Lauri plays like he has over the last month and a half then the answer to your question is yes. He has been playing like a first team all nba league mvp candidate stats wise.

I would say yeah, I think Lauri can be a #1 on a championship team. Dirk did it, I think Lauri can too if you put the right team around him.

I dont think you have to have a shoot for the moon mentality. For instance, if the Jazz have the choice between Cason Wallace and GG Jackson, I'd probably go with Cason. Sure, GG does have higher potential to hit as a 20+ PPG #1/#2 scoring option, but Cason provides so many high level intagibles at a pretty valuable position, so I'd rather have him to pair next to Lauri than the potential of a high level scorer.

This thread title to should changed to Clarkson likely to get traded
Just dont see it happening.

I just dont think any team is going to pony up what it takes to get him seeing as he is going to be a half-year rental. Maybe the Lakers would since they would be pretty confident at having an inside track to re-sign him (assuming they get bird rights, not sure if thats the case tho).

If a team has bird rights to a player (we do) and the player is traded the bird rights are traded with him.

And does anyone think Donny is going to stay in Cleveland? They better hang on to Garland until they are sure and I doubt Donny stays in Cleveland.

No sir... his stats are good... he is very good. He may be a candidate for 3rd team all-nba. He might end up being a top 15-20 guy at his peak... if you don't have a top 5 guy you will need a couple top 20 guys.

Dirk is a little bit of an outlier... he may not have been top 5 but he was damn close. He also needed like 6-7 perfect complimentary pieces and barely was able to pull it off by reaching a gear in the playoffs that made him the most impactful player in the league for that brief period. I just think it might be a tad audacious to think Lauri and the Jazz can duplicate that.

They probably will trade Garland this time next season, if they lose to easy in the playoffs this season, mostly because of Garlands defensive switching issues being a massive hole next to Mitchell. Even though Mitchell is actually buying into the defense Cavs running so it seems, he needs a competent 2 way guard with him for any playoff series or he will burn out quick. I have the Cavs getting a kings ransom if they were to deal Garland next season after the Cavs made a deep playoff run or something, but if that happens Don aint leaving and they aint trading any core players either.
I have them 5th this season with a 2nd round exit. who knows after that

I just figured with all this negativity, the thread needs this.

I am not saying shoot for the moon in the draft... I am saying hope to get in the top 2 if you can. If we land 8/9 that is great and I'd choose Cason or Black. I think they can be higher upside than maybe is assumed. You will still need to land someone that gets to Lauri's level or is such a perfect complimentary piece (like prime Khris Middleton) that the whole becomes more than the sum of their parts. I just don't see Lauri getting to Dirk's level (go ahead and throw per game stats at me if you'd like.... there is definitely some inflation going on right now.. a direct comparison gets you in the same trouble we did when thinking Donovan was as good as MJ).

I don't think Wemby or Scoot are a free ride to a title... I just think getting one of those guys changes your fortune dramatically... its worth investing a potentially mediocre trade of a vet or two, and losing a bit more for half a season. If you don't hit the road gets harder but we have some help. Rather than investing in a guy like OG Anunoby... I'd rather see us pair the Minny pick (say its 14/15) with a couple picks and trade into the top 8... if you could tell me we come away with Black and Whitmore I like that idea more than going for the known commodity that is on a short deal. That is how I'd prefer to shoot the moon...

And lets be honest... you have to shoot for the moon to win a title. Or you have to hit on so many shots in a year or two within each other like the warriors did. Every title team takes a chance - Milwaukee drafted Giannis and then pushed in a ton of assets to get Holiday, Toronto went for a one year rental of Kawhi, Lakers pushed all in on AD and Lebron. Playing it safe is great to make a 50 win team... you have to get aggressive to win it all... at least in most cases.

We can take him and trade as many 1st round we had roger #1score and more!

And what # did we draft Donovan and Gobert at? FYI, we are gonna get higher picks than those 2 were selected with this year FOR SURE. The biggest thing with those 2 wasnt that we drafted them.... It was that we developed them to become the players they are. Much like we are seeing Lauri being developed.

And its not just Don and Rudy... look at the list of absolute best guards in the NBA (our biggest area of need). From players under 27 years old... there are 4 very good young(ish) guards picked in top 5.... Luka (#3), Jaylen (#3), Trae (#5) and Fox (#5)... but there are as many picked way outside of top 5 with Don (#13), SGA (#13), Haliburton (#12), DBook (#13).

I think most of the kids coming into NBA have much more upside than they ever present in their careers because they dont get into right situations. Top picks always get more opportunities because they end up in worse teams and their pedigree allows for more mistakes. But I think late lottery guys can also become top 20 if given equal opportunity.

Also I dont think we are "trying to find an all star better than Lauri". We are in a point where we are still trying to find out "how good Lauri really is". Getting into the playoffs would be the perfect way to see what he is made of.. and would give DA much more information about timelines and such. I dont see a reason why he couldnt be great in the playoffs... but then again you never know until he gets there.

You have passed judgement on the ceiling of Lauri and keep doubling down on that opinion. Most others in here have adjusted their assessments of him.

FWIW the Raptor fans want to trade Gary Trent Jr because apparently Klutch wants a new contract extension starting at $25 mil per season with raises.

JC might be the better all around player when you factor in his playmaking although he's obviously older than GTJ.

I just believe we better be prepared to see Klutch demand a huge contract for JC. We shall see how it plays out. Obviously Danny and the org are having these types of internal talks right now.
JC is the better playmaker and scorer in general. But Trent Jr is a million times better defender which I think this team really needs. Plus he is much younger like you said.
