Clarkson Likely to Get Extension

So he bought a mansion in San Antonio, his home town. He could be moving there or nearby team no?
Houston and SA have lots of cap space. he also just might want to take advantage of a bad market and land his amazing forever house.

I'll go ahead and draw my line in the sand and say that I hope we don't extend Clarkson, especially since he is asking for more money than he can get in an extension. I like JC quite a bit. I also think what he does is extremely valuable (get buckets while closely guarded), but I just don't love the other parts of his game, and also don't think our window matches his.

As such I hope we trade him and get as much value for him as possible.

I'd love to have JC as a no-conscience microwave scorer off the bench, with a pretty short leash... but the way he plays (and has always played), I'm just not sure he can keep it up on the wrong side of 30. For one thing, his defense will absolutely fall off a cliff, if it hasn't already.

Also: we have another guy who would be perfect in that very role: Sexton. And he's much younger. So I'd have no trouble letting Clarkson go. There's no way we should be extending him for pretty big money with the idea that he's gonna keep the starting role.

Trouble is, other teams are probably thinking along the same lines. At this point in his career, he's definitely going to play off the bench wherever he goes. There might be something of a market for him but he won't be getting a huge bag.

Kinda surprised at the reception around here after the guy took it upon himself to orchestrate that miracle finish. Dude basically carried us through that fourth quarter and then down five 1:23 to go then proceeds to score nine consecutive points in a minute's time giving us the four point cushion we needed with about 41 ticks left. His awareness to rise for that second three sandwiched between two defenders with LeVert on his *** was the stuff of genius. It took a miracle finish to beat that team with Mitchell putting on a clinic. Even Don gave the guy props, 'He had that look in his eye and I was just like, damn, it's going to be one of those back-and-forth nights,'' Mitchell said.

Anyway, Ryan don't care what you guys think and we're only a couple million away from the asking price. Truth is, I was ready to trade his *** after his dumb shenanigans in the last game. But the guy can bring it when most on our team can't. He can go toe to toe with Don who is playing in rarified air this year. He's a helluva player still playing at a high level.

I mean, there's only been one comment since the game ended...every other comment in this thread was made before tonight's game.

Hey, I'm not trying to put anyone on a guilt trip. As I said, I was ready to trade him after the Memphis game and even posted something to that effect. Just a little bit surprised after such an impressive game from him that there wasn't a little more recognition, game thread included.

My comment had nothing to do with the Cavs game. The (trade) value of a guy can't hinge on a single game performance anyway. It's about the long run. When you sign guys in this league, expectations of future performance are built into the deal, and this is even more important when the player is in the tail end of their career and will inevitably slow down at some point. JC plays a super athletic position and it's just very tough to keep up when youre 30 to 35.

Obviously he put the team on his back in crunch time against the Cavs and willed the team to a win, but at his age you just can't count on anything like that happening with any regularity in the future. He's not getting any quicker or younger. We've already seen Clarkson's play go up and down all season.

As I said above, IMO he has a place on this team as a bench scorer in the coming years if he wants it, but I suspect he's looking to get paid like a starter now.

Ryan and JC hugging after the game tells me they're tight. Never saw an owner and a player have this level of relationship. I fully expect Clarkson to stay and get paid

A lot of why Ryan Smith wants JC around goes beyond JC as a basketball player. Smith wants and needs JC because JC likes Utah, is a good locker room guy, and helps with the image that Smith wants to create about his team and about Utah. That combination might make it so that we overpay. Smith is big on managing image and he has a clear image he wants to portray.

Clarkson is not without flaws but damn he is so lethal when he is on and crucial to our offense .... We need him! His offense makes up for his mishaps when he is flaming on
