Clearing up Jazz draft scenarios

Option #1. Trade up for a top 3 pick, or not at all.

Option #2. Stay put and let the chips fall as they may.

With option #1, the Jazz get Embiid (not likely), Wiggins or Parker. I'd keep the Core5 and offer up 5, 23 and the 2015 pick, but no more. If they can add a player like that I feel strongly that they will be very improved.

With option #2, it only takes one team to fall in love with Randle, Vonleh or Smart for the Jazz to get Parker, Wiggins or Exum outright. If that happens, I'd hope for option #3. . . take the best player available at 5 and then push hard to trade 23, the 2015 pick and taking back bad contracts to move back up into the top 8 and nab the best left of Gordon, Smart, Vonleh or Randle. All of those guys have All-Star potential. Landing two (especially if one is a top 4 guy) is well worth the risk.

The Jazz could trade down and get a vet and a lower pick and draft Nik Stauskas or McDermott. I would be down with that.

I wouldn't. I'd rather get a young prospect and then see what this young group can do. I am in no hurry to get swept in the first round of the playoffs. Let's build this team properly rather than rush back to mediocrity.

I call it the "Diaw Effect" -- SA's dismantling of an athletically superior Thunder team with a Stretch Four strategy. I'm sure Dennis noticed how Diaw negated Ibaka by pulling him away from the basket. Since we're never going to have two transcendent players like Durant and Westbrook, we should adopt the SA model with great-but-not-transcendent players at every position. PG: Trey/Parker SG: Burks/Greene SF: Hayward/Leonard C: Favors/Duncan. That leaves the PF position: Vonleh/Diaw. I think the Jazz have targeted Vonleh all along because he would be a bigger Marvin Williams with a better low-post game. We then trade Kanter and #23 to Sacramento for #8 and draft a small forward. Mark my word -- Vonleh is our pick.

Honestly I want to see come good info that there is no chance in hell we end up with ****. I had 3 or 4 of my dreams come true in life and I really do not want this one to happen. As I posted before I had a dream way before lottery that we ended up with 5th pick and drafted ****. First part already happened, if second part will happen I probably will go on hiatus from being a Jazz fan. It just would be to much to convince myself to cheer for the team when they will have 4 players I hated prior draft. Already took forever to accept Hayward, Burks and Kanter.

History for the most part does not reflect kindly on the teams that trade down:
•2006: Chicago traded #2 LaMarcus Aldridge to Portland for #4 Tyrus Thomas, 2004 draft rights to #22 overall Viktor Khryapa, and 2007 2nd round pick (Demetris Nichols) Obviously terrible for Chicago
•2004: 2 days before the draft, the Clippers traded #2 (Emeka Okafor) to the expansion Charlotte Bobcats for #4 (Shaun Livingston) and #33 (Lionel Chalmers). Charlotte also agreed to select Predrag Drobnjak in the expansion draft, which was basically a $2.55MM salary dump. Advantage Charlotte
•2001: Clippers traded #2 Tyson Chandler and Brian Skinner (traded 3 weeks later to Toronto) for Elton Brand. This one ended up being ok although it was not really a trade down situation

•1997: Philadelphia traded #2 Keith Van Horn, Michael Cage, Lucious Harris and Don MacLean to New Jersey for #7 Tim Thomas, #21 Anthony Parker, Jim Jackson, and Eric Montross. Disastrous for Philly
•1995: Clippers trade #2 Antonio McDyess and Randy Woods to Denver for #15 Brent Barry and Rodney Rogers. Terrible for Clippers
You forgot the most obvious one:

•2005: Utah acquired the 3rd pick from Portland in exchange for the 6th pick, the 27th pick and a 2006 first-round draft pick. Jazz drafted Deron Williams, Portland gets Martell Webster and Linas Kleiza in 2005 and selects Joel Freeland with the #30 pick in 2006. It was also disclosed after the draft that Utah had promised to take C.J. Miles with their #27 pick. They drafted him at #35 and Larry H. not only guaranteed his contract, but paid him the equivalent of the #27 pick.

What all these deals show is that the price for moving up 1 spot should be no more than the #23 pick. To give Orlando 3 picks including one in the late lottery next season would be outrageous.

To me it is not outrageous if they feel that Exum will be Franchise level player. Remember orlando is said be rather infatuated with exum as well so it will probably take a sweeter deal for them to settle on smart

True. And your proposal does not include trading any of our current promising young players.
And good info on the trades that have involved moving down.

Definitely rep worthy for your posts in this thread.

The Jazz WILL be trading at least 1 of the picks and probably one of the "Core". The Jazz team is so young that they have no room to have 3(4 Neto) rookies on the team. The Jazz need to go for a top 3 talent in the draft. I think they may have a better chance at getting vets with there "assets"

I'd bet 10 dollars that Jazz will trade down.
with 5 they have marginal improvement.
with 2 picks they will have two marginal improvements.

And not enough playing time to keep everyone happy.
Two marginal improvements is not better than swinging for the fences at #5. Marginal improvements (i.e. backups) can be had with the Jazz' cap space. I don't bet $ on the internet, but I'll give you 5 reps if the Jazz trade down. They'll stay at #5 or move up a spot or two (depending on how the first couple of picks go).

None of the top four teams should trade their picks.
Jazz have no chance of moving up.
But Jazz should stay at #5.
One of the next four or five guys should be all star caliber.
Trust Jazz will figure that out and pick him.
The #23 and #35 plus players should be tradeable for better picks or players.
