I would guess that most NBA players do not like basketball. They probably liked it as kids - when they were clear stars and could do everything they wanted and it came out great. In the NBA the same wunderkind kids are role players used in a very specific way and often for limited minutes. The fans of their team often relentlessly pick on them (like they are treating Svi, Anderson and Cody on this site). Most of the players change teams frequently and, even more frequently, are a subject of trade rumors, threatening to uproot their live at zero notice. All of them travel a lot...

The NBA basketball at its heart is just a well-paid, but grueling and demotivating job.

I can't believe this. I would love to be paid to play basketball. Playing any role on any team with any amount of travel for any (livable) pay.

For almost every job only 5%-10% workers are "loving it". And that is true even for the highest paid ones: finance, expensive lawyers, dentists... Most of the NBA players were heavily pushed into basketball being their career since they were kids, regardless of their true interests. And, even when they made it, there are so many things that can constantly grate on you...
You hate flying and a homebody? - Tough luck, buddy.
You are gay? - Better hide it from everybody!
You hate physical contact and being grabbed and scratched by rough sweaty dudes? - You go in and be physical and aggressive!
Oh, and don't forget that you can never eat as much as you want: you need either to be constantly on a diet or to gain (and keep) weight on command.

Brilliant diagnosis. Lemme tell you it's better than diggin a ditch, but likely not what most fans might think. I was watching a game last night and afterward the players of both teams were going down the line bumping fists, only this devolved into a visit time, with everyone intermixing like they were all on the same team. All I could think was Larry and Mike wouldn't do this, but then they probably don't get invited to too many parties. Made me think about the lives of those that resign vs those that keep the faith.

I was in higher ed for 30 or so years. For many of the early years I used to laugh and laugh thinking “I would have paid the university to allow me to teach” if I were a billionaire. Funny thing is, by the time I became a tenured, full Professor, I was burned out by the politics and red tape. I look at my former colleagues and yes, the most successful had that Jordan/Kobe fanaticism to triumph.

I can only speak for myself.
This is what myself has to say on the topic: I would love to be paid to play basketball. Playing any role on any team with any amount of travel for any (livable) pay.

I would only think of doing the job of an athlete by getting paid top lucrative athlete salary (not saying Lebron James level money, a 10 year NBA career around minimun standard contract would do).

That being said, I'd wage the reality being that a role in the NBA (as with most popular sports, even other not so popular ones) has such a ridiculous level of competition for even getting a chance to shine, let alone to get an actual top level spot like being a NBA lottery pick, that in general is available only to those that will put blood and soul into It, regardless of love for the game.
 
Even if you’re just playing a pickup game, if you put up an air-ball, you’d wince or curse or have some type of reaction. Then if you put up another one, you’d be like, “Fuh…” you wouldn’t just act like it’s business as usual.

That really depends on the person. Favors was that way, Kawhi... and Doncic smiles after his misses. The NBA players have all kinds of personalities: Duncan, Kobe, Draymond Green, Lauri, Morant...
 
Nice to see a few bright spots shining through the darkness. If Cody can somehow develop into a solid player then building a good team becomes so much easier. You have to have wings with his size and length to have any chance of matching up with the top teams in this league. The same thing goes for Hendricks who unfortunately bulked up too much during the rehabilitation process but should slim down and get his legs under him with consistent minutes during the 2nd half of the year.
 
Cody Williams, the Theoretically Good Defender.

After one of his highlight dunks, he gave up two wide open threes within the span of two minutes.

I'm enjoying his weird offensive explosions as much as the next idiot, but make no mistake, he's still a terrible defender.
