Cody Williams Hype and Appreciation Thread

Im sorry but that's far from the start of the problem. You dont go from being one of the worst players to a decent player just because you put on 15-20 bs.

I've seen skinny players in the NBA play well despite being skinny. Cody's problems start with his mental.

There have also been some guys who couldn't physically compete. One of them was KZ Okpala, who is out of the league. Another one is Ziaire Williams, now in Brooklyn after moving on from Memphis. Another one is Jalen McDaniels, who is buried deep on the bench in Washington.

Those players also arent skilled at all. It's a skill issue more than it is a body issue.

He just might have the worst motor of anyone I’ve ever seen. He makes Greg Ostertag look like Big Ben Wallace. I think a lot of us excused his lack of a Motor due to size, youth, and injury recovery. After all, his brother is an extremely passionate and hard working player. But the sad truth is that he’s just so lazy and plays with zero sense of passion or urgency. A complete miss by Ainge.

Every sports organization has some kind of grading system for their players. I'm sure the front office is aware of Cody's strengths and weaknesses and has that memorialized in some form of metric data. In their view is he fixable and if so into what? My concern right now is that there are a ton of GLeague players that would grade out higher at this point in time than Cody. Was this a swing and a miss by the player personnel folks or was this a one off by Cody and he goes into year 2 looking like big bro?

It took Johnny Juzang until his 3rd year to convincingly become an NBA player. I think Cody has shown enough potential to give him that type of time window to work on himself and prove he belongs. If Cody does the work, he can make it. But if he isn't doing the work and he isn't making progress, the Jazz could let him go early, like they did with Ochai.

Given his mono diagnosis, I’m hoping that’s most of the reason for his sleepy play.
Hoping for better days…

Either you can shoot and dribble or you can’t bring skinny doesn’t/shouldn’t affect that much. Williams could shoot and dribble some, I don’t know about this Okpala or who he is but Cody can’t do any of that.

Just going to tell most of you I told you so. He didn’t look athletic or explosive in his college highlights. Or skilled. Most of his highlights were spot up threes or straight line drives. I didn’t see it with him. Then was saying the same things in summer league even when he was putting up points. They weren’t stylistic at all. I thought the one thing he had going for him was he could be a good 3&D player. Never saw him play at Colorado just highlights and going off #’s shooting 40% from three I thought he could shoot but that’s not seeming to be the case. He did show out as a one on one defender as he looked good at the start of the season but that’s even declined as the year went on. Maybe that’s the affects of mono, I’ve never had it so I don’t know.
Cody this season had reminded me too much of Exum’s first season.
Exum was more skilled, more explosive and a better shooter.

I was really fired up after Summer League about Cody. I thought he and Tay Henny would provide this massive one-two punch. Shows what I know.

Exum has shown he can play when he is not broken, which sadly is most of the time. He has looked good with Dallas. Cody has not shown anything close to what Exum did when healthy.

The only hope is Jalen Williams spent more time in college and also had a very slow start in the NBA so we can hope for a similar trajectory.

I think Cody just looks too timid, but you do see a base of skills and size that will likely keep him in the league.

He had a couple good games in SL but I saw it as fools gold. He didn’t look particularly good doing it. He had almost no floor game and showed little skill causing separation or handles. A lot of his damage was due to poor skill around him in a chaotic SL game if that makes any sense.

He looks timid because he lacks nba skill sets.
