College Football Conferenece Expansion

I noticed that Utah was being brought up as a possible Big 12 expansion target by some newspapers on the east coast. It makes a lot of sense actually when you really think about. I mean, really think about. Get some drugs in your system and really think about it.

I don't think there are enough drugs out there to make that logical to me. There is no way Utah would even consider leaving the Pac 12 for the Big 12 (or any other conference). I think it was Oklahoma State's president that said they were looking at adding Utah. What a moron.
 
TCU took the Utah position, "We'll play for free for a few years to be in your league." Not saying there is anything wrong with that, you have to do what you have to do, but that's the reason they got in at spot #10. The more demanding BYU is soon to follow.

How do you know what TCU got? I highly doubt TCU isn't getting anything. Some facts here...
1: The Big 12 is still "negotiating" with TCU. TCU has not officially accepted their offer yet. So there is no way you can say they took zero payout.
2: TCU was already in a BCS conference. They weren't in the same situation as Utah was when Utah was invited to the Pac 12.
3: TCU has a buyout to get out of the Big East. Again, not the same situation Utah was in. I doubt TCU pays that buyout and goes to the Big 12 if they aren't getting any money for it.

I know you're hurting about BYU getting passed over. But I highly doubt TCU went in for free.

I have news for you too- with the Big East collapsing, I doubt BYU even gets invited. Back when BYU fans were all saying "Big 12 invitation will be official this Saturday" I saw a report that said BYU fans would be disappointed to find out they were wrong. And one of the reasons given was that with the Big East collapsing, there were now better options than when BYU was rumored to be considered. And specifically, they said there was no way the Big 12 would expand both east and west. So with West Virginia and Louisville looking like the next teams to get invites form the Big 12, I would say it's likely that BYU is no longer being considered.

By the way, Utah didn't play for free for a few years.

Then how much are you guys paying them to play?

Anyway, why does anybody think the Big 12 is stopping at 10, 11, or 12? They are making a power play right now and they are going to grab every last piece with value left in the college football pot. The 14 number that was floating out there a few weeks ago is correct.

The Pac 12 is is paying Utah the full share of the championship game (which by itself is more than the MWC paid Utah) plus Utah got to keep all of their local tv contract money. Plus there is the bowl game which will pay more than any of the MWC bowls.

Next year Utah gets 50% of the full revenue share, 75% the next year, 100% the following year. So it was not a play for free for a few years deal at all.

As for the Big 12- look for them to swallow up the Big East. They can get to 14 teams that way. And the Big East teams are praying that happens at this point, so it will probably happen. The Big East BCS bowl game will then go to the MWC/CUSA title game winner. The new Big 12 commish has already said he is committed to getting them a title game and BCS Bowl, so it is practically guaranteed to go down this way.

If they get eligible (I think they will). Unless it's Vegas Bowl (a real possibility), then it's the same as MWC bowl. Unless you realize they weren't going to win the MWC with Boise in this year, then yes, they will make more money from a bowl.
 
If Louisville and West Virginia accept invitations, then I can see them stopping at 12. BYU might be on the outside looking in again. Of course this also depends on what Missouri ends up doing.
 
IF BYU refused the Big 12's invitation, then their leadership needs to be fired.

#1 Lack of foresight to see what was happening in college sports. Everyone and their dog could see the direction of super-conferences, except for BYU apparently. Maybe the sports people saw it. But perhaps the non-sports people are the ones making the decisions at BYU. Pathetic.
#2, the money wasted on all that tv network stuff would eventually be won back in a big conference. Football alone should do plenty. But also, the other sports.
#3, in order to compete against a certain fanbase up north, you need to join a super conference. Pac-12 vs Idaho? Gee, which one will fans go to?
#4, your other sports. Think Dave Rose is happy to be playing in HS gyms?
#5 Championships. You'll never play for a national championship. Dumbass fans were calling into 1280 the zone yesterday, saying that BYU has a better chance of playing for the NC if they stay independent. Ummm, no.
Even if BYU went undefeated for 2-3 years, they wouldn't get into the NC game. It will become impossible to even sniff the BCS crap games once super-conferences are created.
#6 I seriously wonder how much longer BYU can refuse invites (if it's true), still charge a pretty penny for their games, have lost a few games (like this year), and still receive a good gate while that team up north is playing real football teams and playing for a purpose?

I think with the Pac 12 declining the Texas and Oklahoma schools, we've probably seen the end of the super conference scenario, or at least the current form of superconference thats been talked about. I'm sure the SEC will end up with 14 and maybe a couple other conferences will follow suit but I don't think we'll see the 4, 16 team megaconferences.

BYU needs to work like hell to get into the Big 12. Thriller is right, they will NEVER win a national title as an independent. The schedule would have to be too frontloaded with great opponents and it would indeed take 2 to 3 years of BYU running the table in order to make the voters feel they are "worthy". Thats too much to ask of any school. I also see a mass exodous of BYU fans becoming Utah fans if BYU is left out in the cold. Just listening to sports radio yesterday, tons of BYU fans were calling/texting and proclaiming that they would make the switch if BYU decideds against joining the Big 12 if they are indeed asked.

Keep in mind, your passionate Ute and Cougar fans would never think about switching for a second, but this state is full of fans who are a bit wishy-washy in their love for either school. They tend to throw their support behind who's doing better at the time. It's obviously going to take a toll on BYU if the fans choices are between going up to RES and see USC, Stanford, and Oregon or down to LES and watch WAC games.

There's still some grumblings out there that BYU doesn't want to "sell it's soul" so to speak in regards to joining a BCS conference in which football is viewed as priority #1. I guess you'd have to respect the school for standing it's ground in regards to what image it wants to present, but that's going to be a tough pill to swallow for BYU fans across the board.
