Totally agree. I dont know how realistic it is that he can make a big jump, but I sure love the dude and his attitude and root for him.
Even if Sexton plays to the highest capability of his potential he won't be a starter for a team with high aspirations.
You just can't start a guy of his archetype and expect to win a lot.

What if his archetype changes?
I'm not sure I agree with this. If he gets a little better at defense and becomes a bigger threat from 3 he could be fine if surrounded by the right supporting cast.
- On defense he just needs to learn to move his feet and stay in front of guys. He'll never be switchable, but as long as he's your shortest player I think it's ok.
- On offense he needs to be an equal threat from 3 as he is from driving. Ideally he is playing next to a wing/forward/center that takes on a large portion of the decision making.
Silly to hope for that. Just hope he becomes the best version of what he is good at
You just outlined the biggest problem there is in Sexton becoming a starter in high ceiling team:
He needs to be your shortest player AND he needs to be a scorer.
My question is who plays PG with him? You need a guy who can defend wings, play team defense and is switchable who is also a high end playmaker/passer on offense. Hard to find such guys really. However the self-creating scoring guard archtype is the most crowded and competed for role in the NBA and even some quality bench guys like Herro could probably be had for a pretty cheap price and Sexton is not clearly better in that comparison.
Also if we went for a superstar who is not great defensively like Luka... then how do you hide that guy on defense if you already have a completely unswitchable guy like Sexton? You cant have 2 guys who are not switching and playing solid team defense. If you have just 1 then you are still gonna bleed points, but having 2 is too much.
Its really hard for me to imagine Sexton in a starter role in a championship winning team. As a 6th man, sure.

He's a fat ways away from being viable as a starter on D. He's a fine 3pt shooter, but his volume is terrible and I doubt he can seamlessly raise that and be a efficient shooter.
Small guards who excel as starters in the NBA are a combination of highly cerebral and volume 3pt shooter. Sexton is neither.
This isn't hating, it's just being realistic about what he has shown this far. He can be a 16-18 ppg highly efficient scorer off the bench and that's great. Then you hope some team out there gets desperate down the road (may e this year,maybe next year) for a starting PG and overpays for Sexton based off him excelling in his perfect role, not overextending himself to be something he isn't. But you know Sexton isn't staying in Utah if he is not a starter.
Sexton would be fine as a point guard who brings the ball up the floor, initiates some simple actions at times, but often passes off to a taller teammate who functions as a primary ball handler in the half court. Those guys do exist, and I was thinking of this as a theoretical exercise of picturing him in a starting role on a championship caliber team.
FWIW, I don't see it on our team, since we don't have the players that he would need to be surrounded by.
You are probably right about the defense. He tries really hard already, but just isn't big enough/crafty enough to be effective. Small guys can be effective defenders, so it's not impossible, but really hard to imagine Sexton getting there.
I no longer think he's an awful defender. He definitely proved me wrong this year. He isnt a trash-can. He's very good at what he does. I just doubt his ability to grow enough outside of that. It's just the reality of being 6'1 if you arent on your P's and Q's to a high level you are going to be a negative regardless, especially in the playoffs.
He can probably be a fine starter this year. I dont think it's impossible to make the PO with Sexton as a starter. Is it possible to get to the 2nd round and further? I doubt that.

I thought he was taking considerable leap when Conley got injured, but then Sexton spent basically the entire second half of the season injured. How is it not realistic when right before our eyes we saw both THT and Dunn make big improvements. They were glaringly big, so why not Sexton
