Confession

My brother in law served a mission in Mexico. One letter home (old days, writing on actually paper) he started going into how he had met this fabulous Mexican girl, wanted to make her happy, and therefore had decided to marry her [turn page] to her fiance. My wife said her dad just about had a heart attack prior to the page turn.

#1 prankster. instant classic!

How do you know? In these very-male domains, people aren't supposed to acknowledge it even when they are offended. If a Mormon stepped up and said it wasn't funny, you'd tell them to grow a thicker skin.

Unless I'm looking for a useless discussion, I'd probably say: I'm sorry you feel offended by my joke!
At the same time I'd think: I don't care you don't like it and chuckle because the person most likely hasn't paid enough attention to what I said to grasp that I said 'I feel sorry for you' in a way that expresses pity and it sounded very similar to an apology while it wasn't one.

Nothing like a little punching down to get the day started.

I have a list of web comics on my blog. They all make me laugh regularly. Feel free to start there.

Funny stuff bro…

I also saw that you like quite a few comics that mock God and Christianity. You know, concepts that have been used to justify persecution. Probably a good thing nobody has ever been threatened with death for being a Christian!

1) I haven't seen a joke made by you; I've been discussing the one by PKM.
2) I'm not offended. Saddened, perhaps.

At the same time I'd think: I don't care you don't like it

It's not about what I like, it's about what type of society I want to live in; more specifically, I want to live in one where we don't make fun of people just because they are different.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say or whom you mean. I don't recall saying you felt sorry to anyone, sincerely or otherwise.

Agree. That's why I list his main web comic.

I'm for freedom of speech and freedom of religion. The latter does not insulate from the former. However, I believe I have selected comics that mock 1) views that many people actually hold (unlike the original post), and 2) views that are considered acceptable in the US mainstream. I'll say this much: if you can find a comic in that list and offer an example where it makes fun of people, as opposed to ideas, link to it (here or on my blog), and I'll remove it.

Having been persecuted 1700 years ago, or that you might be subject to persecution in some foreign country, is not an excuse to belittle people who believe differently in this country. The only ways Christians experience so-called persecution in the Western world is when they are denied an exceptional status.

Lulz. You amuse me. I guess it's ok to make fun of people because they're different if lots of people hold that view, right?

You confuse making fun of the person with making fun of the view. Person, view. See how they are different words? If religion were really a fundamental aspect of a person, people would not change religions.

See, this is where you're wrong.

It may not be like this for everybody, but I can with absolutely certainty that my religion is a fundamental aspect of me as a person. My views shape who I am, especially my belief in Christianity…in fact, that shapes me more than anything else. It is my base, my foundation. I know you don't like me much, but I do know that you like Colton. Ask Colton if his religion is a fundamental aspect of him as a person.

You see, when you mock the view of Christianity, you're mocking me the person. And I don't care, you can do whatever you want. Just don't act like you're so much better because PKM cracked a joke on polygamy, and that was "offensive".

Don't think I'll ever be able to forgive PKM for this.

Some of my good friends are Mormon, so this touches close to home for me.

Unless you're not a human being, I'm not wrong.

Human beings are remarkably uninsightful about their motivations and inspirations. I have absolutely no doubt both you and colton believe your values some from your religion, and just as little doubt that you both are wrong, not because of any particular obtuseness, but because you are human. Had you been adopted as an infant by Muslims in Iran, Hindus in India, Shinto in Japan, or Buddhists in Thailand, your religion would have been very different, but you would still be the same person, generally. Yes, all of this applies to me, as well.

Just don't act like you're so much better because PKM cracked a joke on polygamy, and that was "offensive".

I don't think I'm better than PKM (as far as I can determine). If I thought I was, I wouldn't have bothered to comment, because I would be thinking that PKM is not capable of behaving with more consideration. It's because I think of PKM (and you) as people who want to be positive and uplifting that I bother at all.

Then again, that last paragraph could be self-serving, post hoc rationalization that I merely want to believe. I'll have to think about that.

Needless to say, I disagree with you. However, it's not worth the discussion, you're hardly worth the time. Lets get back to the main topic.

Christianity is a viewpoint. Therefore, it's ok to mock this viewpoint, according to you.
Polygamy is also a viewpoint. However, it is not ok to mock this viewpoint, according to you.

Please explain.

You're also disagreeing with the scientific evidence. No skin off my nose.

Who in here has the viewpoint of polygamy?

I was speaking hypothetically about what my reaction would be when having to deal with people who call me out for my humor. And the one I described would be feeling urged to insult you even more in a subtle way to also avoid having to deal with the result of it but having the satisfaction of sticking it to you.
I can't honestly understand how you can project mormon stereotypes in a way that you are offended by it. And you clearly are by your reaction. The sadness is just a result of that.

Who in here has the viewpoint of polygamy?

According to you it shouldn't matter who has the viewpoint. But you're still not answering the question…you're just avoiding and spinning.

You came in here and said that mocking polygamy (and Mormonism) was wrong, and offensive. You then said that it is ok to mock Christianity because it is a viewpoint. If Christianity is a viewpoint, then polygamy (and Mormonism) must also be a view point.

Why is it ok to mock one of these and not the other? Perhaps you could try a direct answer instead of avoiding this time.

Maybe we're talking about different notions of "offended". I'm generally offended by marginalizing stereotypes of any sort. I don't need to be female to express my disapproval at sexism, nor gay to express my disapproval of homophobia, nor elderly to express my disapproval of ageism, etc. I don't need to project myself into being female, gay, old, etc. to feel that sort of offense.

As for whence the sadness comes, I know what I would explain it as (the disconnect between the real and the ideal), but who knows if I'm lying to myself about that?

As usual, you see trees but no forest. So, let me be clear: I have no issue with people mocking the viewpoint that polygamy is an acceptable or desireable lifestyle. For all your earlier comment on my reading ability, it's amusing that you missed the obvious: PKM did not mock the viewpoint of polygamy in his OP, and his remarks were addressed to people who don't believe in polygamy. Your questions were not relevant to this discussion because you understood neither the original post nor my responses.

This is true.. sort of. I was not mocking believers in Polygamy, but just a dumb joke in the general sense. But I also was not addressing non-polygamists, as I did not even think of my post being offensive in any way.. but rather just kind of funny.

So.... rep to whomever can quote the post that started this drivel.
