Could the Jazz Milk Washington if The Ace Saga Sours?

Jazz have his rights for the next 4 years. So, he would forfeit playing for years and collecting $40MM.

Someone did answer it. No, they can't do that. The Jazz own the rights to Ace whether they sign or not.

Draft Rights

When a team selects a player in the NBA Draft, they gain that player's exclusive NBA rights. This means:

  • No other NBA team can sign that player unless his rights are traded.
  • The team holds those rights indefinitely if the player goes overseas or doesn’t sign right away (e.g., “draft-and-stash” internationals).

After a year, if the Jazz offer a Required Tender and he rejects it, they retain his rights for another year. At the end of that year, they can offer another Required Tender, and retain his rights for yet another year.

The Jazz can prevent him from re-entering the draft indefinitely by just repeatedly offering Required Tenders each year.
I just googled this.

If an NBA prospect is drafted but chooses not to sign with the drafting team, they will remain under the exclusive draft rights of that team for one year. During this period, the player cannot sign with another NBA team. They have the option to re-enter the draft the following year, or they can become a restricted free agent if the drafting team tenders a qualifying offer

Won't happen. Don't worry about it

Seems like if it's only one year players can create chaos
What if every player sat out the year and then decided where they wanted to go
I think they sit out a year and then enter the next draft. They still don't decide where they go.
Would be kind of funny if a player did that and then the same team drafted him again the next year lol

Or any place for that matter. The NBA would essentially cease to exist at that point or would be limited to maybe 10 teams total? The NBA is a business and their product is the players. The more players that are drafted and become a Brunson or Jokic, the better it is for the business. These players wouldn't even exist if there was only 10 teams in the NBA today cause every player sat out from playing in Utah, Minny, etc...
Nah, too many players want to play in the NBA for them to eliminate themselves from their dream job and only have 10 teams

I looked up the actual CBA language and now I'm not sure.

When I copy/pasted it to ChatGPT and asked the question I got this answer:
Utah's draft rights do not expire as long as they keep making proper Required Tender offers each year.

Here's how it works under the NBA CBA:

  • A team that drafts a player and makes a Required Tender (a one-year contract at the rookie scale amount) retains that player’s exclusive NBA rights indefinitely — unless:
    • The player signs with the team,
    • The team trades the player’s draft rights,
    • The team renounces or fails to renew the tender, or
    • The player re-enters the draft — which he can only do if the team fails to tender (or withdraws it).

But here's the actual language (Article X Section 4), and I think ChatGPT was wrong:

(a) A Team that drafts a player shall, during the period from the date ofsuch NBA Draft (hereinafter, the “Initial Draft”) to the date of the nextDraft (hereinafter, the “Subsequent Draft”), be the only Team with which such player may negotiate or sign a Player Contract, provided that, (i) on orbefore the July 15 immediately following the Initial Draft (for a First RoundPick), (ii) in the two (2) weeks before the September 5 immediately followingthe Initial Draft (for a Second Round Pick selected in an NBA Draft priorto the 2024 NBA Draft), or (iii) on or before the August 5 immediatelyfollowing the Initial Draft (for a Second Round Pick selected in the 2024NBA Draft or any subsequent NBA Draft), such Team has made a RequiredTender to such player. If a Team has made a Required Tender to such aplayer and the player has not signed a Player Contract within the periodbetween the Initial Draft and the Subsequent Draft, the Team that draftedthe player shall lose its exclusive right to negotiate with the player and theplayer will then be eligible for selection in the Subsequent Draft.
