What's new

Dante Exum has turned into Danny Green (...and his worrying lack of aggression)

I wanted Exum at 5 and if given the choice between them now, I'd choose Exum again. That doesn't mean that we can't say anything negative about him or we can't talk about any worries we have about him. This defensiveness and refusal to engage in any conversations about his shortcomings is insane.

Defensiveness and unwillingness? More like whats the point? He's a young prospect who's shown flashes and is a brilliant passer. He obviously does not have an NBA body yet so why worry until the boy becomes a man? He cant penetrate worth a damn because he cannot absorb contact. We knew this before the draft. It is not a shortcoming until he becomes a man.

A few things that I noticed when putting together the numbers from these two players. . .
Kobe's shot 41% consistently, but his 3pt% went down as he started shooting more. Dante's FG% is nearly identical, even though he started out pretty rough from 3pt%, and he has improved as he's gotten more experience and playing time. Whatever Quin's plan for him is, he's improving as a shooter and has been pretty consistent. Kobe was really hot or cold as a rookie. He had multiple games early on with no points at all. Dante has scored in almost every game he's played in. I'm hoping that the plan is for him to drive more and finish, which should lead to more drive and dishes. I'm pretty happy with his assist rate so far, and think that it should improve as he assumes a bigger role later this year. I'd like to see him run more P&R too. I think that he'd be pretty excellent at it with any of Rudy, Favors or Hayward. The Jazz have the potential to have an incredibly solid Core group going forward if Exum takes some big steps forward over the next 2 and a half years. I don't expect much from him this year or next. . . but I think that by year three he's stronger, faster, smarter and more confident and aggressive. I expect him and Gobert to be looked at in the same manner as Durant and Westbrook. Guys who you can build a team around. The only question is what to do with Hayward at that point.
If exum and gobert are our Westbrook and Durant, then we sure as hell should not trade away our harden or ibaka (hayward and favors).

Look at this one guys:

At this point I feel like he can do that at will. Look at the quick decisive step before the hop-step, he leaves Rose two steps behind with a single sharp move, even after Rose goes under the screen. If teams have scouting reports on him I bet they say Dante looks for the pass every time he goes into the paint. That pass-fake will probably work with very high success rate right now.

Beat your man, create the advantage(I see real potential there with Dante... I think he can do it right now against pretty much every player he plays against(mostly secondary units)), if they are only guarding the pass, fake it and just go to the rim. He can do that so much more right now with the way they are guarding him.
