What's new

Dante has been out forever because he ded

Dante is basically in his 5th rookie year... looks like he gets another next year... Dante is the eternal rookie.

DL is now in a corner here... Favs playing really well... Has talked at length about being a player in FA. We have a few routes to max cap space but they all require losing important stuff. Sometimes if you kick cans down the road you run out of good options and flexibility.

I do wonder if Dante would accept a buyout at $1-2M less than his current deal per year and we can stretch the remaining amount of the deal. He can then pick his next team. We could also move him for a player on a two year deal that is worse but is owed less money... say Chicago wants Dante more than Felicio... can then stretch Felicio's 15M instead of Dante's 19.2M.

I really hope this doesn't give DL more license to run it back because we had some unfortunate things throw kinks in his FA plans. All we are left with is garbage options... unless we can find a really really dumb GM.

If we renounce Rubio and dump Exum (Suns?), how much cap room do we have?

25-26M... Problem is... why the Suns just gonna take him? What else are we giving? DL gonna give a pick to do it (not likely).

We likely just let Favs walk if we pursue space... could also move Crowder or Korver and take nothing back... all three of those guys are contributors. I'm seeing a potentially ugly cakkkk bakkkkking scenario here that is frustrating. All the homer sports writers will say "what do you want him to do... we had no space if we wanted to keep Favs... you want to lose Favs for nothing"

I can also see Dante being included in the potential Kevin Love trade that will happen if DL feels pressure to do "something"

I'm curious if any GM values Dante as a positive. Meaning i think it would cost the jazz to move him.

Hopefully he has met his deductibles and out of pocket maximum so it wont cost the Jazz any more to keep him through December.

No need to do anything with Favors unless we opt out and he re-ups for like 3/39.

If we can move Exum (trade a 2nd too) and I know that’s a big if at this point, and renounce Rubio, and sign Satoransky and Ross, or another bench scorer, would be significant upgrades at this point tonour roster.

Some may view him as an okay flier, but I can almost guarantee no GM sees him on his current deal, injured, and never having sustained success as a negative... it's just how negative. With just one year left you might be able to move him without taking back too much bad salary... with a team option or Non-guaranteed third year maybe just into someone's space.

Dante's deal was always gonna be a gamble... We didn't take the necessary precautions to account for this kind of downside. I can't tell you why... look at what Randle got. Young player who had proven more and was unrestricted... two years 17M total with a player option. Joe Harris, Fred Van Vleet, all got similar deals to Randle... so why does Dante get more per year and extra years? Those guys had proven more as NBA players and had less injury concern.

I know DL likely adjusted his restricted free agency strategy because Gordo was not happy with it, but you can negotiate a team friendly deal and if it doesn't work let the guy sit out there for a while. Marcus Smart sat out there forever... was clearly pissy... eventually signed and is having a career year.

And to answer your original question HH, because the Suns might strike out in FA and might are upside in him. With just two years left on his deal, they may see it as worth the minimal risk it entails.
