What's new

Defense will now force baseline

I suppose it's what's best for our current roster, but the great defenses of the NBA mostly force to the middle (Chicago, Dallas, Boston). I understand that they all have much better interior defenders than the Jazz, but I was hoping that Favors could be the big man that we funnel the offense towards.

This is a positive sign that maybe Ty is going to change things up and be his own coach. I can't believe that Jerry didn't make this change a long time ago.

Did you watch the Jazz anytime from, oh 1989 to 2011?

Or is this a sarcastic smiley thing?

There are pluses and minuses to both forcing to the middle and forcing baseline. I like the idea mainly because maybe a shakeup in defensive philosophy will make them practice it more and harder and maybe it will stick. Anything to drive the defensive mindset. I think this also works better because the force to the middle idea was dependent mainly on having a large body in the middle who could block shots (Tag, Eaton). Without that shot-blocking defender it is probably better to force baseline. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

And a large body back in the days when you could actually play defense. Now you touch a guy and it's a foul. Definitely a positive change for the Jazz.

Thanks TyCorb. If you just let Harris be natural and let him listen to his instincts you will unleash the defensive beast within.

So, without the smilies, I can't tell if you're being serious or sarcastic here.

It's a brave and confusing new world out there.

Made me smile. :-)

I was serious, though--I think the "force to the baseline" is a much better plan than "force to middle". There's a reason why practically no other NBA teams force to the middle.

as a general principle, this is a step in the right direction. However, I hope they do more than just stick dogmatically to this scheme. There are times when it is more important to take away a player's dominant habits, even if that means forcing to the middle. In other words, I hope they apply some game-to-game adjustments based on player profiles.

Corbin - at least for now - is building a system and sticking to it. On that, he has said that if you have 3 guys that know the gameplan and 2 that don't, then you have 5 guys not playing together. Simplify the rules and play team D.

I agree with you in principle, but I think this step is totally necessary to get to the place we both think is best (I think?).

I think the point of this is to simply the defense so less rotational errors are made.

This is exactly it. Our rotations were so horrific last year. I'm not always the biggest fan of forcing baseline because getting beat baseline leads to easy buckets (and fouls). But I'm in favor of anything which simplifies rotations so I applaud this move.

But it simply has more strengths. If you go baseline, your options are cut by about in half.

Again, I think learning both disciplines and using them situationally can make for an amazing defense with the right roster. Which is actually what makes me most excited with in regards to Favors. With some focus shifted to passing and floor-spacing I think we could see a beautiful team. I really try to temper my excitement which I usually convince myself is blind homerism, but really, this team could be something special.

Anyway.

I realize this. That's why I said it is a good "general principle."

That said, you don't gain much by forcing Dwayne Wade to the baseline.... that's all I'm saying.

definitely a "step in the right direction." No doubt.

Yep. Good.
