What's new

Deron's comments on Jeremy Evans

Just saying he's got the potential to be good, nothing more than that but it's still a good sign considering how late he was picked.

Glass- boy do I hope you are right. That would be awesome. At the very least, I hope one of us is right!

That has got to be a sarcastic comment .. I mean .. c'mon that's just not possible!!!

Seems to me people were saying similar things about Shawn Marion back when he was with the Suns. If we can get a poor mans Shawn Marion in his prime for someone we picked up for next to nothing, I'll take it and not look back.

One thing we know is that Jerry loves guys that do the dirty work. And that's Jeremy Evans; he loves to rebound and block shots. If he can shoot as well as he says he can, I think we'll be surprised at how much he plays as a rookie.

Araujo did the dirty work. He also worked pretty hard. This did not allow him to see the floor.

I'm going to repost what I said in another thread since I meant to post it here:

I really think we may be getting ahead of ourselves on Evans with regard to him being a Millsap or Matthews. Millsap was drafted after his junior year, where he put up 20/13 for both his junior and sophomore year. Matthews put up 18/6 in his senior year. In contrast, Jeremy evans put up 10/7 his senior year. Though there are multiple variables in any statistical comparison, this is a rather large gap. I understand that he's an "energy guy" but getting praise and positive quotes about his ability may not go as far as me may want to think. I don't doubt that he could come in and have a positive, limited role, but certainly not to the extent of a Millsap or Matthews. If everyone is caught up in the excitement of the new guy that's fine. I just know I don't want to read ceaseless posts in February about how Evans would have been in the rookie game and a tough runner up for rookie of the year had Sloan just given him consistent minutes at the beginning of the season or hearing often the phrase "we've seen what he can do" referring to a couple games where he will have a solid contribution.

First off, anything you get from a second round pick is a bonus.

Secondly, I don't think looking at statistics is the best way to gauge all players. As Western Kentucky fans have pointed out here before, basketball was one of two sports Jeremy played in college (track being the other), and so he didn't have the option of putting on weight or devoting all his time to basketball. Also, Western Kentucky needed him to play at the 5, even though he seems more like a 3/4 (offensively, the played outside-in, which also didn't help his numbers).

What we do know is the guy is an elite athlete. Whether he figures out the other stuff (is he a hard worker? Can he gain weight? Does he have or can he develop BBall IQ and skills?, etc.), we don't know yet.

Evans sounds a little like Carey Scurry. Scurry was a 6-7 pogo stick who rebounded like a center in college, tying Akeem Olajuwon one year.

Of course he was not the brightest light on the Salt Palace scoreboard, and when he pulled a knife on Mel Turpin, he was sent packing.

Hopefully Evans is brighter than that.

Hopefully Evans has no knives and a designated driver. I always hoped Carey Scurry would get it, but didn't know that "it" was "busted".
