Discussing the problem of reintegrating Georgia-native Derrick Favors, a member of the Utah Jazz

Right now we've got Diaw as a mostly miserably placeholder at the PF spot, with Joe Johnson seemingly entrenched in his role as a back-up. It seems that Q is setting up things so that, when 'healthy', Favors will step back into his starting role. If this is the case, is it the right approach?

I'm tempted to believe that at this point Joe Johnson should be made the starter for the rest of the season. When healthy, Favors should be the third big. Well, at least I think this is a thread-worthy discussion.

Didn't Snyder say that the team looked real good with JJ at the 4, and that they're going to go with that for the time being? That was a couple of weeks ago. I wonder what changed.

I'd really like to see Quin try to start Lyles. It could do wonders for his confidence, plus could he really be any worse than Boris is starting? Bring Favors/Diaw/Johnson in as the second unit front court.

JJ started playing a bit worse ever since he returned from injury. I think the Jazz think it's due to overplaying him. They probably want to keep him somewhat fresh for the playoffs.

With Favors back he should start at the 4 and be the primary back-up at the 5. Period.

Guy gets injured and everyone starts hating. He'll earn our love in the playoffs, just watch.

your suggestion is to start SUCK instead of starting SUCK? ok.

this isn't hate, guy. It's about creating some consistency and style/force heading into the playoffs.

I wouldn't say period. I wouldn't want to start him against the Rockets.

this may be true, but to bring us back to the point of the thread: my suggestion has nothing to do with the amount of minutes.

I think we should not give up on players when they fail to break out of their injury times as quickly as we want them to. And in Favors' case, you have a player that immediately bought a home in Utah and publicly said that he wants to retire here. There are cap space and rotation concerns and will always be, and what Favors can bring right now will be the right question to measure what brings more, his talent or his trade value. But right now, I just find it unfair for a guy like Favors not to give him enough chance to get 100% healthy and reach a level which he really changes games, whether if it's coming off the bench or starting at 4.

Ideally I'd like to see Favors sit until the last game or two. Especially if the Spurs and Warriors are sitting people. You play him about 20 minutes in each of those games to help knock some rust off.

Come playoff time the jazz are mostly likely facing the Clippers or Thunder. As Bulletproof indicated, Favors is a big asset in either one of those matchups. JJ should be his primary back up and Diaw should see his time cut.

Big rotation in the playoffs should look like this:

Gobert/Favors/Withey
Favors/JJ

Diaw, Lyles and Bolomboy should be used rarely if at all.

My concern with that is how long it took for him to get back to even a rotation-level player the last time he was shaking off rust. it was like 10+ games before he found any groove.

I have felt that way as well. We should get him all the way healthy before playing him. We don't really need him in the regular season. But he may never get all the way healthy and it takes him awhile to shake off the rust when he has come back from time off. I'll just have to trust the Jazz decision I guess. Since it's hard to get mad when I/we have no clue what's really going on with him.

I think it's going to take more than two games to get back in the groove. Like others have said, it's hard for us to know, because we don't know the extent of his injuries. I would say, at least five games with incremental increases in minutes. The Jazz really need him against the Clips.
