Does Lauri Get Dealt Before The Season Starts?

It's a clear indicator that he will be used as a trade piece in the future, no matter what the FO tells him. Considering the timelines, by the time Utah is ready to contend, his descent has likely already begun and would get traded regardless.

So the answer to the original question is yes, he will get traded eventually anyway. And for his sake, I hope he gets traded before he's eligible to extend so he doesn't need to be the one who makes the difficult but correct choice for his career that is not extending. Unless his biggest goal is to advance on the most games play without a single playoff game ladder, which would be a disappointment.

Lauri being traded on a long term contract is the way he gets to a contending team.

Going to FA only gets him to one of the capspace teams which are usually the scrub teams.

Besides its life changing money and one injury next season could mean he never gets another chance.

Also him signing the deal it has nothing to do with lack of integrity. Its how this business works.

Extending guarantees another wasted year in Utah without any say of his future unless he becomes a diva à la Harden, which he won't. He's not young any more, and his prime years can be over very soon.

I couldn't care less how many hundreds of millions he will make during his career, he and his family are set for life and he knows it, it's purely down to basketball now. Writing an extension gives Ainge full authority to do whatever he wants to do with him, if he wants to sell his soul for money and be remembered as another one of Ainge's chess pieces, go ahead.

It’s very easy to say you don’t care about money when it’s not your name on the contract. These contracts are going for almost a quarter of a billion dollars. Imagine all the good a person could do with that kind of money. I definitely prefer to see it go to good people - and Lauri is good people.

If I were Lauri, I’d prefer to either be traded to the Spurs or extended by the Jazz. The ability to renegotiate the contract before extending is huge.
 
I might be jinxing it but I don’t think it happens. Listened to the Tony Jones interview with the local Sacramento station. I think we know we need to tank… I think we know the easiest way to do that and most “profitable” way to do it is to move Lauri… but I think they want the Bridges package plus and are just seeing if it’s out there. I won’t be surprised if they extend Lauri and then move other guys. The return likely not as great of course but the goal in tact.
 
Here's why I don't think a deal is imminent: Lauri can't pass the other team's physical at the moment. His shoulder injury still hasn't healed as he's not playing for Finland this summer.

And here is the answer to the small-team problem: draft and develop foreign players. They rarely want to be traded: you already mentioned Gobert, but the same was true for Okur, Ingles and Kirilenko. And, looking at other teams, Dirk stayed with the same franchise through thick and thin, Duncan was happy to ride out the last years on the not-so-contending Spurs.
