When hitchBOT the hitchhiking robot started his journey in Boston two weeks ago he wanted to see the entire country. Unfortunately, he never made it out of the Northeast. The researchers who built hitchBOT announced today that they need to stop the experiment because hitchBOT was vandalized in Philadelphia.

From the researchers who built hitchBOT:

hitchBOT’s trip came to an end last night in Philadelphia after having spent a little over two weeks hitchhiking and visiting sites in Boston, Salem, Gloucester, Marblehead, and New York City. Unfortunately, hitchBOT was vandalized overnight in Philadelphia; sometimes bad things happen to good robots. We know that many of hitchBOT’s fans will be disappointed, but we want them to be assured that this great experiment is not over. For now we will focus on the question “what can be learned from this?” and explore future adventures for robots and humans.
The goal of the hitchhiking trip was to see how humans would interact with hitchBOT. And apparently the answer was “not well.” HitchBOT has been around the world, including trips across the entirety of Canada and Germany without major incident. But America is clearly a hard land for our robot brothers and sisters.

The robot made it across Germany and Canada with no issues, but it hits Philly and is killed for its spare parts, or something.

So is this just typical of Americans? Does this say anything about our society compared to Canada or Germany?

One thing I thought of is that it is easy to point out the "bad" areas in the US, as in places with high rates of crime and violence, like Philly, Detroit, LA, etc. while it is difficult to do this for Canada or Germany.

What do you think?

why'd the proprietor(s) imagine it would be treated any better than an ATM?

i know exactly what kinda people do this. shouldnt have gone to the innercity

Most smart inventors realize "cute" creepy robots are more acceptable to humans than they should be otherwise. That's why they usually look like something like this:

^^^^^ You pick up that guy....and all of sudden there is an amber alert out because you tried to run off with it to Mexico. It's not a wonder that that pile of trash looking "robot" hitchiker got his *** kicked.

btw i know for example here in netherlands if you leave that robot in certain areas he would get vandalized, but in other areas he will just be fine

Yeah but only in the US not in the other 1st world countries where he was deployed. That was the point.

Maybe if hitchBOT wasn't suck a slut and kept its legs closed this never would've happened.

ISIS.

And I was not about to fall into your German supremacy trap, so I ignored the point, and moved onto pointing out what I found interesting in the story. We're allowed to do that on American message boards.

Look, robot was apparently left on a bench in Philly in the early morning. Philly alone isn't known for having the Dirk de la Dirk people as you Germans say - Mistake #1. And the Dirk de la Dirk gets even murkier with the early morning crowd, no matter what city you're in -Mistake #2. Recipe for robot homicide, I say.

If I found that robot at 16, 17, or 18, I probably would have blown it up. I personally think it was probably Joel Embiid taking out his injury frustrations.

Interesting, but like most all assumptions, wrong. I just wanted to discuss whether people felt this was a difference in culture or just happenstance. There are lots of ways I think Germany is as backwater as it gets. But I will admit that I am never afraid to walk around at night here, or have my daughter walk home, or take the train, from her friends house after dark.

One thing that should be pointed out is that the median age of Germany is 10 years older than that of the US.

Half of the German population is older than 46. That number in the US is 36. That is a HUGE difference that has a very real impact on each society.

Guarantee if the robot went through the 'burbs at night, there'd be a million white kids vandalizing it.

Exactly which one of the things I listed doesn't have an impact on suburban white kids? I think they all do.
