Donovan Mitchell unlikely to ask for trade per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst

This is definitely the way things seem to be trending. All quiet on the trade front league wide.

I’m okay throwing together a rag tag group that Mitchell can lead going into next year. Maybe we deal him at the deadline next season. No harm in seeing what we have.

Even Conley who I’d love to see moved. If he’s not valued right now let him rehab his value for the first half of the season next year. Maybe you get some real assets at the trade deadline for a seemingly rejuvenated Conley.

Assuming actual contention is off the table. I do think my preference will be losing. But that team still wouldn’t be very good. And we could pivot to full tank mode at the deadline if we wanted.

We never saw Mitchell run Jazz without Gobert. I won’t be too upset to have my curiosity satiated.
Yeah but this is the half-assing way to guarantee a pick in the 12-16 range. Just good enough to get a crappy pick, and bad enough we are no fun to watch and cannot win anything. That is fan purgatory. We might as well be the Kings. I really hope we do something else, even if it is at the trade deadline. We need to swing for the fences in gathering assets to rebuild asap and make another run with all new faces, imo.

I trust Windy when it comes to the gossip/speculation side of things.

Ultimately I think this is good. I don’t think the Jazz necessarily get the best trade package right at this moment. It may have been true for Rudy, but Rudy is 30. My stance on Don/tanking hasn’t changed. I don’t have urgency to tank and trade Donovan even though I don’t think keeping him here for the long term is a realistic option. I don’t think his trade value will drop, it’s more likely to rise imo, and there’s no benefit to tanking now versus later.

I think a lot of us have been jaded by Haywards fake persona, hair, and smile. I hope DM is not the same and does want to win, and if it’s here, great.
I think we all naturally go to the “fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me”.
We don’t want to be Thor in the Thor / Loki relationship.
Maybe DM just wants to win and thinks we have a shot without Gobert and maybe Quin in the picture.
Am I naive? Maybe.

I still think if the NYK package is offered, you jump on it. No sense stumbling into more wins than we need to next season. But, I digress:
Hard to saying without knowing what it is.

If it's just Randle + 3-4 mid picks without any of their better young talent, I'd probably pass on that.

Though by the same token, that deal isn’t going anywhere. And it doesn’t hurt to just play it out for now.
Uhhhh… we don’t know that at all. Miami will do something… they won’t wait 12 months.

Unless Donovan knows something is happening that we dont in terms of the roster, then there is no way Donovan thinks he can win with this team. He probably thinks he can get a lot of stats and there will be no pressure to play defense.

Utah's Hope:
  • Statistically Donovan kills it this season. Maybe he averages something stupid like 32 ppg. His insane stats get him in the ASG and he isnt mad because he gets to get his.
  • The Jazz still lose a ton because Donovan doesnt play defense, but no one blames him for the losses because the roster is very bad
  • Donovan is OK with sitting out games due to "injury"
  • A team starts the season poorly, sees his performance at the deadline and is like "damn, we got to make this deal"
Hell we don't even need "injury" anymore. They just called it rest last season. Might as well just call it a recovery day. Or a personal day, or spa day. PTO like the rest of the working world. At the rate this is becoming a real thing they might as well reduce the number of games and give everyone extra days off, or extend the season to account for rest.

Makes Wilt's >48 mpg season with zero missed games an even greater feat of athleticism. If that guy had had modern medicine and training he would have been more than a force of nature. He would have been nearly supernatural. I imagine Kawhi's career would have already been over if he had played in the 80's. No way he would be missing this many games for rest.

Don't get me wrong, I am on the side of the player here, they need time to recover because the last thing we need is anyone getting injured. No one except extreme scumbag pieces of human garbage wishes that on anyone. I just wish the NBA would account for that and adjust the season or schedule to accommodate so we get more floor time for the players we all want to see, not less.

Defintiely not what I was advocating for, as 12-16 range in my nightmare. Maybe we just disagree on how good(or bad) the current team would be. I think they would still be really bad. And on the fringe of play-in contention at best when the deadline comes. With a horrible team around him, I'm honestly not sure how much Mitchell kills your lottery odds. I expect to have a realistic shot of landing in the top three of the draft next year no matter what.

Fair. I should say that an offer on the level on Herro, Robinson, and some picks will always be out there. And if Miami made a different trade I'm not sad about missing out on that package at all.

I think you are not far off. I really think Mitchell is driven first and foremost by status and acceptance by the established stars in the league. After that, having this be his team seems to be what drives him. As in the "build it up to tear it down" comment. Seems frustrated a bit he wasn't more involved in the decision-making. I think winning matters but I think these other things are more important, and frankly I think that is pretty common in the young stars of today's NBA. The changes to the all-star game highlight this the best. It is more about being in the "good ol' boys" club than it is about the game or the sport or the competition anymore. They are all already at the pinnacle. They have all the money in the world. The driving force is in their social media connections and interactions. Being seen, and more importantly being seen by and with the right people. That is the bigger driver now.

I figured you weren't advocating for it, that is just where I see it headed if we run out the team as we currently stand. Remember, fringe play-in is still a pick in the late lottery. To truly tank we would need to be in the bottom 5 or 6 in the league. The team we have now would likely be somewhere in the 12-16 range in the league as it stands. Not terrible enough to get anything of value, not good enough to be worth watching. That is a nightmare.
