Donovan Mitchell Would Not Start for Either Finals Team

“Donovan Mitchell wouldn’t…………”
Pure speculation at best- Golden State no, Boston maybe is my best guess. Of course the same could be said for our other All Star as well - though I see his chances of starting being better for the Warriors.

The fact that Mitchell is being singled out is a polarizing issue as the media reports invite us to take sides as it is. I think you either have to trade them both or nothing because either way there is going to be backlash from fans.

And the irony of it all is that they were made for each other. One guy gets blown by a lot, the other guy has been trained to play goalie and is exceptionally good at it. One guy struggles in the offensive scheme and the other one flourishes, partly because he’s a race horse with blinders on. They’re both deeply flawed when it comes to playing both ends of the court IMO but their weaknesses are partly ameliorated by the other’s strengths. This idea that Gobert’s departure would benefit Mitchell’s game is pure folly IMO.

And for the record, I’m one that feels that a coaching change is more critical to our improvement than wholesale roster changes. Anyway I highly doubt we trade an All Star before our maiden hosting of the ASG.

Totally agree with that. Don will not play better without Rudy and it's works the other way too. Problems are multiple : Coach did not manage to succeed, and players around Rudy and Don are the good matches. Make some good trade ( specially add defense) and we can win a championship. Going for a rebuild when you got a top scorer and the best NBA defender does not make sense for me. We have a 2 years window, FO have to be smart.

Part of DM's success is the incredible screens Rudy sets. I don't think people appreciate how great of a screen setter Rudy is.

You are right but how is that relevant? The Jazz are not building around Royce, NAW, etc.

When the centerpiece of your potential plan forward is not good enough to start in the Finals, the hard ceiling of your team is a first round exit even if all goes perfect...
Now you are just making up stuff in order to validate your point. First both Donovan and Rudy are certainly good enough to start in the finals. The ceiling of a finals team is not as high you made out to be. I mean Jae mother ****ing Crowder that your Cy of all people despised so much have started on two Finals teams back to back. Should we trade Donovan for Crowder and build the team around him then?

Second you said this teams hard ceiling is a first round exit even though Donovan had lifted us past the first round against a team of reigning MVP+2 all stars in his rookie season?

And like I said, I'm not asking for perfection. No one is. But when your roster are filled with G league level talent and players that got salary dumped by tanking/non-playoff teams, I'm not sure we are far from coming to a point where we point the fingers to our best players. Sure our best player cannot elevate a group of scrubs into the Conference finals/finals like MVP candidates Luka/Jokic/Harden/Westbrook.(those guys have won 0 rings combined). But Donovan ain't as good as those guys. Literally no one is arguing against that. You are missing the point if you believe Donovan or Rudy not being the best of the best is the main cause for our struggle.

Rudy is an exceptional screener, but Donovan doesn't really use screens to score. He seems to prefer isolation.

"Mitchell ranks second in the league in both points per game (12.9 ppg) and points per possession (1.06 ppp) on pick-and-roll plays among the 84 players with at least 100 pick-and-roll possessions so far this season."

Let me help you with the numbers. Second in the league in points per game on pick and rolls means he actually does use screens to score. Let me know if you need additional help.

I can’t help you here LoPo anyone with eyes knows Mitchell uses Rudy for screens A LOT.

Even more of a reason to just keep both of them and move some sort of combination of Conley/Royce/Bogey.

I just don’t know if people actually watch the games anymore. It’s one of the most efficient effective actions in the nba and both guys benefit from it tremendously… as well as the others around them. We have needed better counters for teams that are great at switching and have the right personnel…

We get ourselves in trouble when there is too much isolation… why would we willingly sign up for more… so we can have a few extra awesome highlights?
