By the way, the Jazz do not have Bird Rights over Matthews, so whatever they pay him is deducted from the MLE whether we match an offer or not. That means if he signs an offer one dollar above the MLE, the Jazz can't (and ****ing shouldn't) match. That scenario is not happening.
And whether the money comes out of the MLE or not is irrelevant as the Jazz weren't spending that anyway (at least not all of it on a non-Jazz free agent).

I don't know, he's not/won't be a major cog on a contender and the new CBA is likely to come down significantly on salaries (which is why Chandler even thought about opting out and why Jefferson did). The Jazz have a love affair with overpaying for their role players and it's been killing them. They have to just say no sometime.

Yeah, but Matthews is probably the one role player that is probably worth overpaying for. He was the best thing about the Jazz last year, if all the players put out the effort he did, the Jazz would be a much better team.
In a market where everyone's saving their money for stars, all-stars, and superstars, and on the dawn of a new CBA for a player that's about what he's going to be for the rest of his career (underwhelming athlete, undersized, not a playmaker, not a great passer, not a great rebounder, not a great shooter [he's good when left open], and only as good a defender as his assignment is big or tough), yeah, $3 million is overpaying.
And I like Matthews. And while I like Millsap, I'm still not sure matching was a great idea.
Umm... Deron Williams? Carlos Boozer? You're kidding, right?
