Evan McMullin vs Mike Lee

Happy to see McMullin is going to give Lee a run for his money. Lee is one of the worst, most partisan and divisive Senators in the nation.

2 of the latest polls show essentially mirrored numbers, Lee seems to actually have a fight on his hands here. I would encourage all reasonable Utahn’s to vote for McMullin. A perfect candidate? No. But a lot better than Lee, a lot less partisan, and a big slap in the face to political extremism.

I think Lee is an embarrassment to the state of Utah and I'd love nothing more than to send his dumb *** packing.

I'm voting for Ally Isom in the primary and McMullin for Senate in the general.

I think it was smart for the Democrats to not run an opposition candidate. Not that they shouldn't compete, but this is an opportunity to get rid of a Trumper which for me is priority number 1. Only candidates that stand against Trump and put the Jan. 6th insurrection at his feet are options for me. Now and forever.

I never voted prior to 2016. Then i voted again in 2020. I will always vote against trump and his cult. If and when they are not around anymore I will probably stop giving a **** and stop voting.

It is too much tied to the dominant religion unfortunately. They tend to vote as they feel is divinely appointed instead of thinking it through and making a rational choice. The church spent far too much time pushing the republican agenda and now it is fully ingrained. Sad really.

I think they can’t bring themselves to vote for a Democrat. I think an Independent candidate can actually yield a better chance. Once the Republican primary is over, McMullin needs to start running a targeted and strong campaign at that 20%.

Hope springs eternal. But I don’t think even an indep will do. Too many Mormons are like Rusty, sure republicans aren’t perfect but to vote for anything but God’s party is heresy.

Good post.

I’m curious, when do you see the church’s big effort to push the Republican agenda? Was it under Reagan? Or was it under Bush in the early 2000s when they worked hard to keep the gays from marrying in California? Or was it some other time?

Growing up LDS in Utah county sort of made it hard for me to differentiate church from politics. To me, they were essentially one and the same. I didn’t really see how weird it was until after Prop 8 when I was out of high school and realized the extent of the church’s efforts to prevent gay marriage from being legalized in CA. Once I began to work at restaurants in Utah and learned of some of our insane alcohol laws, it became obvious that the church was heavily involved in politics.
 
I am 62, and it has always been expected my entire lifetime for a church member to vote Republican. It's the higher law, of course. Those who were known to vote Democrat are whispered about and not completely trusted. I'm sure that isn't a blanket statement and may not be true at all outside of Utah.

My mother would die before voting Democrat. She realizes Trump is awful, but if he is the party nominee she will vote for him "because what choice do I have?"

Well… yeah. I mean, shouldn’t government be managed like a business? And yeah I might not agree with everything Hitler said, but tax cuts and judges. He also hates the same people I hate, immigrants and socialists. It just feels like we need to take our country back and make it great, like it was past times…

Or gas prices fall a buck or two. I mean, who needs self government? aren’t elections boring and tedious? We keep having them! I want a strong man who can entertain me, give me cheap gas, and own my political enemies (like those uppidty blacks that take knees before football games and those annoying as hell women who demand to have choice in anything).

I think close to 30% of Americans would vote for Hitler in 2024 if they could. I mean we need strong leadership and we need to own the libs. Nothing else matters.

I'm not even kidding. I think the lowest possible number of Americans who would vote for actual Hitler is 18% but it could be as high as 40%.

I agree with you here. I think 30% of the other side would also vote to completely silence the words/thoughts you don’t like. You’re both fascists. A biological man isn’t a woman?
