What's new

expected/elated/disappointed

Compare the age of the jazz core players, or their starters, or their whole team against the western conference playoff teams.

It is simply a fact that they are young. It is not my opinion or something.

Look at the rebuilds of teams like philly, minnesota, boston, detroit, etc.

Our rebuild is kicking their rebuilds ***..... And make no mistake, we are still rebuilding even if we are near the end of it.

Three years ago we had millsap, jefferson, earl watson, randy foye, etc. We were the definition of a treadmill team.

The fact that we are even talking about the playoffs and being contenders after a casting off our best veterans, having a tank year, and getting a new gm and coach is very impressive.

I guarantee the rest of the league is taking note and wanting to emulate our rebuild.

I'm totally with you, except that I see a team with a great rebuild like ours as a team that should make the playoffs and be competitive in the playoffs, because if just that is still a year or two away then the trajectory doesn't point towards a championship at all, it points towards maybe one day having home court advantage in the first round before it's time for another rebuild.

All I'm saying is that if there's nothing special about this team then that's fine. But if there is then the team should do special things, like make some noise in the playoffs this year. Have a strong enough record this season to easily make the playoffs. Stuff like that, where they defy their age and all the rest and win anyway.

One way to do it is to become contenders with lots of very good players growing together and having great chemistry and coaching as they all grow up and hit their primes together.

Another way is to become contenders way before anyone expects them to with a bunch of young over achievers.

Another way is to have a bunch of high value players on good contracts and trade for a legit superstar.

The jazz are in a good position to be able to do all three!

I hope for the second scenario, just like you do, but realize that might not be the scenario that happens.

I personally believe that we have the players on the roster right now to be contenders but that we just won't know it for certain until 2 seasons from now

If we miss the playoffs it might mean we are not going to be very good with this roster.

It also might mean that we are just too young and not ready yet and we will be contenders in a couple years.

Hell even if we look great and win a playoff series that doesn't mean that we will automatically continue to get better and get to a championship contender level.

I expected Rudy to beast
I'll be elated if the Jazz win the Championship in the really tough west
I'm disappointed in the behavior of NAOS

Give your expectations for the Jazz for this season, what they'd have to do to get you truly elated, and how bad they'd have to be for you to be disappointed with the season. I'll start:

  • I expect a 7 or 8 seed in the playoffs.
  • I'd be elated if they get home court advantage. Or obviously if they win a playoff series without having home court advantage.
  • I'd be very disappointed if they don't end up with a winning record.

Who's next?

This is spot on for me. I'd add that I'd be very disappointed with a losing record and simply disappointed with only 41-43 wins.

I'm pretty much the same. We need to at least make the playoffs. If things go very well, Hayward and Favors takes big steps, along with Gobert we could get home court.
Realistically, I think they make the playoffs barely after a hard fight at the end. What I am looking for is for them to not get swept like the last time. I want to win at least
two games. That would be a step. Next year obviously theyd need to win a series or two. 3 years from now go for the title.

Exactly. Was just gonna add the playoffs bit. I expect us to make the playoffs and win at least one game while competing well in the other ones. Last time was a joke. We need to see a fire and competitive spirit in Hayward and Favors this time around.

Here's a table made by RealGM and reddit user KqWIN about expected wins depending on defensive and offensive rating and point differential in the league:

Great post.

Even if we're just 21st on the offensive end and 6th on the defensive end, that's 44 wins. 20th and 3rd is 49 wins. Certainly possible. This gives me hope.

Three years ago the Jazz were three years away from being contenders...

The treadmill doesn't stop.

The Jazz are sort of young, but it's not like we've got a team full of rookies.
Three years away three years ago was a dream. Building the way the Jazz are takes longer than that. 5-6 years minimum to get the pieces in place and that is after they traded Deron and started all over again. 2-3 more years should have always been the time frame to become real contenders and not the pretenders they were with Deron, Boozer and Memo.

My dad bet me $100 that the Jazz won't win 35 games lol and for every game over 35 wins he pays me an extra $10 I didn't want to do it because it's highway robbery on my end but he insisted
