Looking at our salary situation over the next year, the Jazz FO have some decisions to make. It looks very likely that a tear down will not happen as the Jazz are full of praise for our players, and especially the younger ones. If they do think that this team has a potential to make real noise in the West, they have to be proactive. Traditionally, the Jazz have been very conservative and have let the market dictate the values for our players. This time they have to act much, much earlier to avoid having to let key players go because of tax concerns.
The two players that have to break out if we are to have any chance of getting HCA, are Hood and Exum. They are both RFAs next year. We would love to see one or both of them really grow into stars this season, but if we don`t extend them now, that could end up really hurting us. If either Hood or Exum - or both - play well next season, a team is going to throw the max at them. We need to prevent this by signing both of them to extensions now. If we could get both for a combined $30 million next year, we could go into next off season knowing that we could pay Favors $20 million and still not go into the luxury tax. If we don`t extend them and Hood shines in the absence of Indiana Judas, he will get maxed next year and he and Exum will end up costing us $40+ million combined.
The table below shows the salaries for 2018. I`ve combined Exum and Hood for $30 million, added salary for the pick 17 next year (Playoffs, baby!) and three second round picks. Neto`s salary is his cap hold and he can be released. Burks is in there too and can be moved, but if we can fit it all under the tax, he expires when Rubio needs a new deal.
Cap projections for 2018 at the moment are $103 million and $125 for tax.
