Exum Update

^
Just the opposite. Dante should be thankful he landed on a team with a coaching staff so willing to teach and be patient. Exum was one of the least prepared rookies to hit the league. He couldn't shoot, wouldn't drive to the hoop. Now he has the opportunity to come back slowly from his injury, get 25-30 mins next season as part of the PG/SG rotation with Ricky and Donovan and then become the starter when Rubio's contract expires.

Jazz had a HOF PG you may have heard of by the name of John Stockton. He started 5 games as rookie, 38 as a 2nd year player and only 2 his 3rd year. And he had FOUR years of college, not like Dante who had zero college experience.

Exum played in all 82 games as a rookie, starting 41. Last year he played in 66 and started 26. He shot an abysmal 30% on his 3's. Jazz were in it to win it last season. Dante's play was hurting the team both offensively and defensively. It was great he "broke out" in garbage time against GS. Let's hope what he's worked on carries forward once he shakes off the rust.

He wasn't hurting the team after the start of the year. I checked at one point and the team had a positive net rating with him playing after January. I stopped tracking it but I'd be surprised if it had changed a ton. I like what you said above though. It's just a shame he got injured and he'll still get a chance to fight for a starting position assuming the Jazz are telling the truth about how they feel about him as a player. Considering all the injuries and his rawness coming out he's still in a really good position. I could see a lot of teams already giving up on him and trading him by now.

The Exum homers are living in a vacuum with hindsight as ammo for their argument. The Jazz were a playoff team, gunning for position, trying to keep their All Star player. While it would have been nice to develop Exum further last season, it could have cost us wins. Pure and simple. Yes, we sacrificed development in what ultimately was a successful season with a catastrophic result, but that is no justification for looking back and criticizing Quin's decision. Winning is what ultimately matters, and he did just that.

I'm excited for Exum's return and I want him to succeed. Last year is behind us and he has a long leash now. It's all on him.
I don't agree with this. I do understand the logic of it and I think you are correct that this was the thought process. It was just overly cautious and kind of anti-intellectual imo. I think Quin saw something with his eye test that convinced him Mack was better for the team (probably that he thought he was more of an offensive threat in the second unit, and less likely to screw up). He could run something like Quin's slowdown sets more convincingly and Quin went with that. Criticizing that doesn't make somebody an Exum homer.

I like Dante's look ,still looks sleek but stronger BUT we know for now Dante's game revolves around his electric 1st step and speed up and down the court.
This works perfectly with DM's game who I've been reading wants to get up and down the court faster but lacks a running mate.

Dante hitting those 3's. I wonder how long until he is cleared for contact drills/practice.

Is there anybody out there who hopes Exum returns too early or before he's ready?

I always thinks it adds to the drama of the game when a player comes back early. Every time he drives to the rim it would become must see TV.

Also, there is something special about watching a guy play when he is not in game shape. It reminds me of simpler times, like when Shaq played for the Celtics.

In other words, no.

Yeah I think so. In a way it is the same principle as giving a guy an extension for above his current production value. You bank on development when you are dealing with young players. Maybe saying the entire season is a stretch, but he should have been very slow to eliminate a stable role for Exum. I don't think Exum's play warranted all the volatility in his PT. I think that volatility hurt him as a young player, and made him more hesitant to make mistakes if anything. I don't think the decision had anything to do with Exum's development which is why I think it was handled badly.

Agreed.
I put it like this. If you have two players who suck and you have to play one of them then play the one who has more upside and will be around longer.

Man... reading this thread makes me think of how pissed I was at TJ Warren. I mean, I probably don't need to rehash this but Dante worked so hard in the offseason to come back and make a leap but TJ totally squandered that with just a plain dumb decision to go for a block on that play. Had no chance. It was reckless. Players don't be reckless like that, especially in a freakin preseason game

If you see the tweet by Andy Larsen about Exum practising pre the Memphis game..... (don't watch the 44 second vid where he goes 1/6 unguarded :) )

Did the Jazz hired Mountain to be a decoy on defense? Who the heck is this bearded monster?
