Exum Update

People forget Exum has good chemistry with Gobert and probably Mitchell too based on their SL games. Not to mention he's only 22 which fits our core-2's timeline.
We'll need to see how he meshes with the current group before writing him off. I still don't have the slightest idea what kind of contract he should be offered.

So theirs some concern of rotation /chemistry issues with Exum who has been a Jazz player for 4 years,(Practice,SL and reg season and playoffs)but Crowder can come in play 7 games and NO PROBLEMS with chemistry/rotation issues EVEN though he still can't shoot as has been the case all year for Crowder. ...SMH and LOL..Right
Crowder is a proven vet, has been playing all season, and has taken over a chunk of the minutes of players we traded away (Hood, Johnson) or who are injured (Sefalosha) - O'Neale has taken the rest. And no-one has said his current shooting isn't a concern.

Exum is about to make his third attempt at his rookie season, hasn't proven anything other than he still has potential, hasn't played basketball at all for 6 months, and last played in a meaningful game last June (if you can call the last game of an inevitable playoff sweep "meaningful"). He will also have to take minutes away from active players - which is fine if it's just Burks and Neto, since they are playing themselves out of the rotation anyway, but the amount of minutes he would play would be so small as to be a borderline waste of time. Otherwise he will take minutes away from productive players - again, fine if he's productive, but he has no track record to say he will, other than he looked real good in Summer League. Of course, if that's the version of Dante we get (instead of the Deer-in-Headlights Dante), then that's a great thing. But it still requires more of an adjustment than just slotting Crowder into vacant minutes.

For Utah to be great - Exum needs to be really really good.
Friggin Royce getting minutes over him would kill my world...

Its funny how everyone can give Crowder/Rubio the benefit of the doubt saying he needs a full offseason to get the playbook down. Yet Exum has only just had his first offseason where he wasnt recovering from injury. Its all so hypocritical.

For one. Dante is 22 and was a raw project, once we signed Hill I never expected Dante to take over fulltime until he has 24-25, thats still 2-3yrs away. How come people can be patient with Rubio/Crowder/Ingles but not Exum...

Baffles me.

The reason is that Rubio, crowder and Ingles have shown they could produce on a consistent basis in the past, Dante hasn't...

You're not talking about the same Royce who already is a plus-minus wizard in his rookie year, are you?

Iawtp let’s not ever say “friggin” and Royce unless we are referring to him as Royce “Friggin” O’Neale when he does something awesome.

Royce does a lot of things that help us win... may never be a consistent double digit scorer but he has some elite role player potential.

Exum gets ABs minutes and if he does well he can take minutes from Neto too.

So we are back to Exum having to earn every minute he gets are we? No one else has had to this year, just let the kid play.

Royce has earned his minutes and Jonas deserves more. At times Ricky should have been shown the bench but he's turned things around. Only guy getting time that is not deserving is AB... it makes me very sad to say it... I hope he figures it out and makes me look terrible. 1000% rooting for the guy, but some of his mistakes kill me.

Joe Jesus was getting minutes he didn't deserve but that issue has taken care of itself.

I think we find 15 minutes or so for him a night and honestly that is fine while he is coming back. If he plays better then give him all of Neto's minutes and cut into some of Ricky's. I think we could actually steal some minutes from Ingles and DM to keep them fresh too.

Exum deserves to play Period. Has tremendous upside, everyone else in this conversation is much closer to their actual or theoretical ceiling. I like Burks, but he dumb and Quin don't. Mitchell has plateaued in the last 20 games, part of the reason is defenses are more concentrated on him. But I have no doubt Exum will earn the time. Can't wait.

Okay agreed. When you said take ABs minutes I thought you meant the 8mins he plays every second game.

Exum will have to certainly cut into Royce's minutes. I'd expect it to be something like Donovan 36, Rubio 30, Royce 15, Exum 15

AB gets roughly 10 minutes a night... Royce is currently getting 18 a night. Neto gets 6-7. I think Royce and Exum both have enough positional flexibility to get 15-18 minutes a night.

I just think Royce's play has place him higher in the rotation than Exum. I understand the long term, but just throwing Exum out there for 25 minutes a night may not help him. It's tough to integrate a player this late in the season. Especially a unique and raw one (based on last time we saw him in real NBA games). If their play is roughly equal I'd err on the side of giving Dante more minutes.

I think we are on the same page... he needs 15 minutes a night and because of the low minutes Snyder needs to live with his mistakes and let him play through them more.

If he replaces Burks and Neto he's going to get 15-20 minutes a game. Definitely not a waste of time at all. I think Crowder's adjustment to a completely different style of offense and teammates will be much bigger than Exum just knocking off a bit of rust. It's not like he had a lower leg injury and was unable to stay in shape.

We all good friend.

Id like 20mins but 15 would be fine. He will need consistent minutes so 4-5mins a qtr would be great.

Royce would have to play some 3 to get more than 15 if Exum is getting 15 or Rubio's minutes get cut.

I agree I wouldn't throw Exum in for huge minutes at all and Royce has earned the minutes he is getting.
