Exum vs Burke in first NBA games

Crazy how much more confidence he shows on that 3 point shot than he did at any time this off-season (Summer League, FIBA). On the first 3 pointer, he flips it to Ingles in the corner every time, but he was confident and knew he could hit it.

I love what i see so far. Hope to see dante penetrate more. Bbr has him as shooting 3/4 of his shots as 3s. Id like to see that come down to about 2/5 as the season wears on

I have one complaint about Exum's D; he always gets beat off the dribble. His perimeter defense and effort level are great, but guards often run past him. I've seen this a lot with rookies, so I'm sure he will fix it soon enough. But right now, his D is not as good as some are claiming.

QS is using Exum perfectly right now - he's putting him in a position to be successful. I think as the season goes on you'll see a 4-7 minute bump in his mpg; but my guess is this is where he'll be for now.

As far as Burke is concerned, you got to give him 82 games in a work-able system - at minimum. The detractors around here all have valid points but I see a lot of good things in the kid too. It's just way to early to slam the coffin on this kid.

Most of the time when he gets beat off the dribble is because of lack of strength and experience paired up with lack of concentration/awareness when getting through screens. He doesn't see the screen coming and he gets left stuck at it. He's been getting better at it though...

For comparison:

Trey Burke first 3 games:
52 minutes - 20 points - 8 assists - 8 rebounds - 1 steal - 3 turnovers - 36% shooting - 12.5% 3point

Dante Exum first 3 games:
47 minutes - 17 points - 4 assists - 2 rebounds - 3 steals - 4 turnovers - 54.5% shooting - 50% 3point

I don't think stats tell the whole story. Trey was a lot more aggressive and forcing the action -- look at his shooting percentages. He also wasn't setting up the offense very well, though I see he had a good number of assists, because he was plowing in there and it opened up things. Exum is moving the ball, which results in good percentage shots, though not necessarily him getting the assist. Basically, he's doing the job of a point guard, setting up the offense far better than Trey did in his early games.

Also two different offenses. Quin's system is not PG-centric. Assist totals are bound to be lower because more players are touching the ball; it's not always the PG setting up plays.

Good stuff. I need to ease up on trey.
