Favors Equals Dwight Howard

If we get the Golden State 1st round pick this year, would ya'll trade it + Al Jefferson for Howard IF he agreed to a long-term deal with the Jazz? Hey, I'd even throw in CJ and Raja Bell...

The answer is yes, but boy do you have it coming. I can hear them now.

Orlando wouldnt trade Howard for only that much.

Nope, too much baggage.

Yea I would do that trade if his back isn't going to be an issue and if he signs a long term deal. The problem is it will NEVER happen. Orlando wouldn't do the deal and Dwight doesn't want to come to Utah.

Yeah, Howard has ZERO outside game and can't make free throws. If Favors develops an outside game AND Millsap grows into being a POWER SF instead of a SMALL PF, Dwight would help us team-wise. Obviously him and Favors together would create a new level of 'twin towers' defensively!
As far as Orlando trading Howard, we're in a better position to offer more without disrupting our whole lineup than any other team in the NBA. Doubt we'd do it though; just curious what everyone thought...

Wayyy too homerish, even for Locke.
Let's be realistic here.

I love people continuing to sniff Howard's jock despite the fact that he hasn't improved in nearly five straight years and averages only around 20 points which is pathetic for a guy with his size, athleticism, conditioning and surrounding cast of shooters. The dude is severely overrated and Favors could be better. Period.

Agreed, I always thought he was overrated. Favors definitely should be better eventually, he almost as athletic but much more coordinated.

1. If Howard agreed to an extension with Utah there is no way they would NOT do it!

2. the "than any other team in the NBA" part of your quote is wrong. Chicago had the trade pieces for Howard, but he had ruled out Chicago. He also supposedly ruled out the Lakers (who would have given up Bynum). Howard's number 1 objective is not about winning - it's about location/endorsements/increasing his brand. Salt Lake does not accomplish any of that.

Hey...but would you guys trade our GSW pick for Kobe and then sign Nash? We would be old, but I just don't know if the Jazz would do it... We'd be the best team in the league if that happened!

I may be a homer, but I think we will see a day when Favors can surpass Howard. It will be up to how much work Favors is willing to put into being the beast that he can and should be. I think he has the desire, and a chip on his shoulder that will push him to his limits.
I look forward to him having a summer league, more Santa Barbara trips and a full training camp to see what he can bring next season. I'm liking what I'm seeing this season.

Nash yes, Kobe no. But that's based on my personal hatred of Bryant, not on basketball factors.

Getting back to the original point, yes, I agree Locker is way too premature on his comparison. But Favors DOES have that potential. And I agree, Derrick can be a much better player offensively. I like the four bigs we have right now. I want to see them come out and continue their strong play next season. I hope the plan is to ask Millsap to play more SF next year. He can do it and it makes the Jazz a much better team. It won't work against all opponents, but so many teams are going to have trouble matching up, particularly against Millsap's strength inside against other SF's. It lets Paul do exactly what he did before Boozer left...just outmuscle others for rebounds and putbacks.

A rule for me is you never project that a guy that is NOT *insert All-NBA/HOF player* to become one. Locke is flagrantly breaking that rule.

Maybe he does and maybe he doesn't, but asserting that something WILL be when it IS not is a little silly. I hope Favors is a rich man's Dwight Howard, but let's keep our feet on the ground, please.

Agreed. I think a lot of people in this thread are playing the Favors highlight reel in their head while forgetting some of his truly awful performances. Being inconsistent is often a part of being young, but there's no guarantee he'll grow out of it.

Keyword: Could

I think Favors could be much better, but don't count your chickens before the eggs hatch.

Locke hasn't been saying Favors is progressing like Howard, Locke is saying the Favors IS Howard right now.

Favors obviously has the potential to pass Dwight, and I think a guy like Kendall Marshall would make it happen.

Favors has improved much quicker than I expected. Same goes for Hayward. If he continues to improve and doesn't get injured, I can definitely see him matching Howard. Personally, I do think Dwight is a little overrated. His game is too narrowly focused (like Jefferson's) and frankly, with his strength, foot speed, width, and length, I would think he should be scoring at least 25+ per game.

So are you saying he could match "lazy" Dwight, or are you saying he could match "focused/best-case-scenario" Dwight?

Defensively, I can see Favors making as big an impact as Howard, particularly since he has improved his rebounding this year, and it was pretty clear that he realized that he could just rebound everything and had 16, 17, 10 rebounds right in a row. Before these games he had 0 & 3 rebounds, but then he just became so aggressive on the boards--this is so important for his development. You can see the rebounding numbers from March 12 on: https://espn.go.com/nba/player/gamelog/_/id/4257/derrick-favors.

Offensively, he needs to work on his dribbling, passing, timing, patience, and touch. Patience is huge and he rushes his movements and shots quite a bit. Watch D. Wade, Durant, or Al Jefferson when they play offense. It is under control with meaningful movements even though they still use their athleticism/skill.
