What's new

favors' offense

Not saying he can become Duncan, just saying that he should mimic the style of Duncan's patient offense . Favors too wild in the post
You really don't want a player who can't do anything with the ball holding it patiently.

So utterly baffling that he can't/doesn't/refuses to focus on a right-hook over the left shoulder. Or make rules for himself, like only take jumpshots when not on the move (faced up with a second or two or spot-ups).

Anyway, I've pretty much given up on Favors becoming a decent offensive player and am just hoping he surprises me.

Been there for a while now. Good advice for everyone else to follow.

What qualifies as "decent" on offense? I'd guess Favors puts up 14ppg while taking fewer FGA. Sounds pretty decent to me, especially for a giant, athletic big who we're pairing with a big who we can expect to become quite a potent scorer.

Being able to be more than an opportunistic, skill-less scorer. Converting at above 50% from the field is an absolute necessity as well.

He needs to get up to 50%, for sure. But getting to the FT line at the rate he does allows me to feel comfortable cutting him some slack when it comes to FG%. At least for now. It's when you shoot below 50% AND never get to the FT line that you've really got a problem (Al J).

Not trying to be too much of a Favors apologist (his offensive development HAS been underwhelming), but I do think there's some overacting going on lately.

He's a defensive big that I still believe can give you adequate enough offensive production when paired with someone like Kanter.

Would you say that Al was elite offensively? Or even decent? In Al's career, he as had 3 of nine seasons where he shot above 50%, and he is viewed as the best offensive big in the game at this point, or close to it. I think saying that above 50% is an absolute must to be "decent" is not a necessity, but if he could get that, it would be great.

A better question to me is if he can convert free throws and get to the line at a better rate than Al. If he shoots somewhere around 47% for his career, then I would be happy. I think if he can be enough of a threat that he can't be left alone, then we can put a lot of the offensive duty on Kanter, and let Favors punish team when they leave him alone.

I've long seen Favors as a defensive presence that would be good for about 10-12 ppg. Kanter is the offensive side of that equation.

So when Favors was getting about 22 minutes per game, he was averaging 10 points per game. he will probably average closer to 36 minutes per game this year, and get about 15 ppg. Is that an acceptable number for everyone? What do we consider decent offensive production? If he scored 20 ppg, would he be elite? I think 15 points per game is what we will get from him this year. If he develops any sort of go to move, or any sort of offense outside of putbacks and second chance points, he will be closer to 20 ppg one day. But I don't think we necessarily need that. Any offensive production we get from Favors on top of 10-15 ppg is just gravy. Kanter will score a ton, Hayward will score some, and we ought to pick up a few shooters as well.

I'm good with that. And as long as he keeps playing defense and rebounding the way he has been than I am stoked.

I don't get why so many think he has not improved a ton. I also don't get why so many think he must get shots and get going early on. We do have an Enes.

I've always said Favors becoming a scoring threat was an outside shot. However, I still don't see why he cannot develop Jermaine O'Neal's soft power game. He's already adding some nice baseline fakes to get into the middle of the lane and shoot a soft shot like Jermaine used to, and that free throw line drive will be coming along as soon as he learns not to get the traveling called. He can perfect a few things this season and then add that deadly spin cycle next summer.

Favors at 21 scored at a higher per 36 rate than Jermaine did at 21 and shoots better from the floor and the line too.

This right here I definitely agree on. Kanter and Favors can get killed in defending the pnr against quicker fours. If they cannot impose their will upon teams on the other end then Corbin will have no choice but to play a stretch four who can guard against this within reason.

I am sorry to inform you but Marvin Williams is not that guy.

I'm not saying Marvin is the best stretch four around, but I do feel pretty confident saying that it was the role he seemed most comfortable in last season.

nice discussion lads!
kudos to all these classy posters, who have enriched this thread with well-thought messages!

BTW, all has already been said that I may utter about Favors.

10-12? He was already giving us 9 in 20 minutes at age 21.

I say 13-14 this year, 15-17 in his prime years.
