Do you realize that during Katrina they could have shipped in millions of pounds of water, food, baby diapers, etc. and made a huge impact on both their name brand and the NO community that they would be held in reverence forever. Wal-Mart made a huge mistake in not taking a more active role in Katrina. They have reaped what they deserve. Wal-Mart all by itself could have mitigated Katrina. I've never understood why they didn't take on a more central role. Wal-Mart could have elevated themselves to "God-Like" level.

While FEMA flounders, Wal-Mart earns kudos for its rapid response to Hurricane Katrina. Wal-Mart is able to use its logistical prowess to organize the donation of $20 million in cash, 1,500 truckloads of free merchandise, food for 100,000 meals, as well as the promise of a job for every one of its displaced workers.​

I stand corrected. I don't recall hearing or seeing any of this in the first few days after Katrina hit when people needed it most.

Probably because you were watching people being plucked from their roofs by the Coast Guard or political posturing by the news outlets.
 
Someone has red cheeks or at least should. Btw, Walmart has pledged 2 billion dollars to help with hunger by 2015. Those selfish fools.

That will be a huge boost to the effort. I applaud them most certainly.


Some interesting numbers to think about. Over that 5 year period Walmart will have projected revenues of $1.2 trillion (about $400 billion per year), with net profit in excess of $65 billion (about $13 billion per year). So this amount donated equates to 0.01% of gross revenue and 3% of net profit over the 5 year time frame. From the standpoint of profit that is substantial. Not many companies have the financial position or the desire to donate that large a percentage of profits, and nearly that percentage of shareholder equity (valued at over $65 billion). Granted this will be offset somewhat in the write-off but it is still a solid chunk of change by any standard.
 
Wally World's presence alone in some South American countries is single handedly curing a lot of poverty issues. An extremely high % of food in under developed countries goes to waste before it can get to market and spoils in the market (I've read India is about 50%). Walmart is able to provide a sales outlet and the storage tools necessary for efficient crop utilization. The farmers often get less per unit but more than make up for it in higher sales. They've also been able to plan the planting season better. Some years is a huge gamble for the small farmer, but not anymore. At the same time, Walmart is providing a cheaper product for consumers and more are able to afford to live. It's win-win.

I'm sure I'll get plenty of flack for this one.
 
This is good stuff. I'm glad Walmart is doing this. Now if they'd only provide good benefits to their employees we'd be half-way to not needing a federal health care program.
