The problem with drafting Valentine is it would feel like the jazz would be bunting with no one base, just to get a hit.

I would rather approach this draft swinging for the fences. If they strike out it will suck but it would be striking out while swinging.

I see luwawu is making contact type of player. I think he will make a roster and at worst you would get a hit. Not sure he has the chance to be a home run but i would take a triple.

Korkmaz as has some homerun potential but also a strike out too. I have done some reading and watching videos and the guy has a look at me mentality. That worries me because is he coachable?

Skal scares me to death after reading dr jones assessment of his work habits.

You all know how i feel about maker. He has the chance to be a home run but an out of the park home run. He seems to have a good work ethic. The problem you have with all players out of africa is their age and development. He is still my pick

I tend to lean toward Maker, as well. I like Skal's offensive potential more, but I have less faith that he'll actually reach that potential. Maker seems like the right combination of talent and motor.

Why did scouts go from sucking Thon's dick to hating on him? Did he just not improve over the years? All the reports I've read say he's a high character guy and hard worker both on and off the court.

I have doubts about Valentine's mobility and athleticism at the next level. I think he's an excellent college player and just a rotation player in the NBA, similar in some respects to TJ Warren from NC State a couple years back. Just my take -- he'll be good, but not that special. Admittedly, haven't watched him too much.

His low FT attempts is a bad sign also. He likes to throw up a little running hook on his drives that work ok for college defenders but might be useless against NBA defenders.
He can sure shoot the basketball though, and seems to find any open player immediately with accurate, crisp passes.

He's improved over the years but of course that doesn't mean he's been sending consistent signals every stop of the way, and when you've got the hype that Maker's achieved so early, people tend to overreact..

His recruitment was an absolute circus.. I'm sure somehow that didn't help..

The $64,000 question with Thon is definitely; is he a gimmick?

On a bad day, vs the wrong matchup he might not look as athletic as you thought, he might look weaker than you thought, he might not grab rebounds you think he should've had, his handle might look sloppy, his shot selection might be off but I think he's really improved in that area..


I don't think he's a gimmick.. I just think he's got damn nifty bag of tricks for a 7'1" player.. I think he's less of a gimmick than Perry Jones III for sure..

Would you be good with him as the pick? I would be, but maybe I'm missing something? You've brought up the question of whether Skal's dropping stock is similar to Drummond's; I'd ask the same question in regards to Thon.

The Jazz traded away Shabazz Muhammad, I think that could be an indicator...

The Jazz never had him. They drafted the guy minny wanted because we were trading.

Valentine and bazz are so different why did you bring this up.

I would agree. I don't think he's anywhere near the athlete that Trey is.

The other Trey (Burke) has sufficiently scared me away from guys who are tremendous leaders in college but might not have the physical gifts required to excel in the NBA.

I think if you played a lineup like Trey Burke-Denzel Valentine-Hood-Hayward-Favors.. that Valentine and Trey would end up taking too many shots while using an inordinate amount of the clock..

Shelvin Mack-Valentine lineups might have a similar issue.. i could see them freezing out/disrupting the rhythm of Burks and Lyles..

Why are we entertaining Burke lineups when it's clear he is out of the rotation and probably out of Utah?

yup.. he's probably not going to be all that effective getting to the rim, which worries me, that plus his meh defensive potential should keep the Jazz away..

They don't want to draft a 6'5" version of Trey Burke with the 12th pick..

Valentine can shoot pass and rebound. Can't get to the free throw line all that much. Which of those does Trey do? If he's a sg he's got good size of he's a SF he is just below average. He has a standing reach of 8'7" which is exactly the same as Hayward. Average NBA sf is 8'8".

If you want to say he's slow and will struggle on defense I get that but him Burke,bazz and even Kyle Anderson are bad comps. Anderson can't guard on the wing at all because he is super slow... But he's too slight to guard pfs. Even then he seems to have carved out a role on a great team. I think Anderson is a better playmaker but Valentine is a much better shooter. They shot similar percentages from three but Valentine got a ton more attempts up. He's not a chucker. He scored 19 pts on 14 shots.

He is not without flaw and his ceiling may be just a good rotation player or below average starter but honestly in a bad draft with the 12th pick you can swing for home runs and end up with the next center who washes out of the league in a year or get a guy who can contribute now on the cheap. I think Valentine is an upgrade to ingles from day one with the potential to be the bench shooter playmaker we need. If he was a lockdown defender or a great athlete he'd be a top 5 pick.

Trey could do all those things in college too.

Not at the levels that Valentine can for his position. Denzel also has good size for his position Trey is too slight. I think Trey is a good backup in the league at some point and that may be what Valentine is. At 12 beggers can't be choosers.
