Following potential 2014 draftees

mcdermott is matt harpring with a better 3pt shot

harpring was a better athlete. that's not saying much, but mcdermott really looks like he is athletically challenged. i followed harpring forever, and he was a good athlete in college. he was leaner for sure back then. and harpring was a tough son of a gun and i always liked his effort on D. if mcdermott can be like harpring than i wouldn't mind picking him up in 2nd

Harpring could play 2 positions when he first came over. He was a great pickup until he started having knee problems. Definitely agree on him being more athletic. He was also tougher. Did you know he used to play football?

But unlike Matt, McDermott has an ELITE skill; he's a lights-out shooter. If a team has enough other assets and can use McDermott strictly off the bench or in certain key spots they're going to get a helluva deal. But if a team needs him to be a 3rd option and start, then no, he wouldn't be a good pick for them. He'll go late lottery-teens. If he falls a bit, I could defintely see Phoenix taking him at #18.

Sounds like most of us are just assuming McDermott isn't tough. According to the DX scouting report, he is pretty tough and gives a lot of effort on defense. Not a Jimmer type super-star who completely coast on the defensive end.

I agree with this, but there's only so much you can do when you're a limited athlete with a weak handle.

I just think it is worth noting there's a good chance he's going to struggle mightily against athletic players that are his same size (most players do), and he's kind of a tweener. Again, in the right system I think he could be a good player...I just don't think in Utah he would be. Not with Corbin.

Just joining into the discussion right now: what is the main thing(s) that separate Doug McDermott from Ryan Anderson?

Anderson averaged 21.2PPG and 9.9RPG, so the rebounding edge is obvious-- but at the same time, this production only ever got UC Berkeley to the NIT. 2nd team all-American. Is this really that far of a cry from McDermott?

Mind you, I think I have watched Creighton play one game in my entire life. I know nothing about the college careers of either player.

So what do you know about McDermott? You follow him in HS?

Height, rebounding, Anderson is slightly better on defense.

I remember watching Anderson in college...he was very good. He actually has some really good post moves, not sure if uses them in the NBA or not. Played aggressive. He's definitely bigger and longer than McDermott. People always want to make the comparison between the two, but I'm not really crazy about it.

Oh, and Cal sucked when Anderson was there. Team production doesn't mean anything in this case. Anderson also faced better competition and left when he was a sophomore.

I feel like I sound that I don't like McDermott. I do like him, I just think he has a lot of limitations. Somebody that can shoot like him will be able to play in the NBA though, no doubt about that.
