Following potential 2015 draftees

Towns seems to be the guy with ability to get it done on both ends of the floor. Enes Kanter who can defend and protect the rim. He'd be lights out as a third big with Rudy and Favors.

Russell with back to back 28 point performances.

Feel sorry for Hood with his ankle.. but Looney could be a good insurance policy for him.

(if the 3 head monster of Winslow/Hezonja/Johnson are off the board).

I doubt Towns is a guy you draft to come off the bench. He should be an All Star in his own right within a few years. But i get it.

As much as I believe in Dante Exum's potential, I really think the Jazz should consider packaging him & a pick or 2 in order to acquire D'Angelo Russell. Obviously, this would depend on what else would be required to do so. I would first attempt to package several picks (this year's, OKC, GSW, & future 1sts) with some combination of Burke, Burks, Hood, Booker. If that's not an option, I would strongly consider Exum & this year's pick (& even 1 of OKC/GSW). Now, while this would almost certainly be an overpay, there are several reasons why this should at the very least be considered.

1. The team is ready to win now & Russell appears more ready to contribute next year than Exum does.

2. As this year has proven, with Favors & Gobert up front, our defense will be good enough regardless of who is in the backcourt.

3. As this year has proven, the team is lacking the offense necessary to truly compete. While defense may be what gets you there, you still need that guy who can take over a playoff series offensively.

4. Russell is the closest thing to an available (to the Jazz at least) player who has the potential to be an elite-level scorer. As much as I like Hezonja, Russell seems to be the much safer pick & while I do value defense over offense, I realize that you need to have the right amount of balance on both sides of the ball. Utah is unlikely to be able to acquire that type of player via FA or trade, so the draft is most likely their only opportunity to do so.

As much as I would prefer the balance & flexibility of a team consisting of Exum (pass first PG, great defense), Russell (elite scorer), Hayward (all-around player), Favors (great defense, enough offensive ability), & Gobert (elite defense) with Burks (great slasher/finisher) running the 2nd unit as our 6th man, that may not be an option. Russell & Gobert would give us an elite player on each side of the ball with Hayward (great offense, good defense) & Favors (great defense, good offense) rounding out the starting 5 (plus the best PG/SG/SF that we can acquire to play alongside those 4).

I have by no means given up on Exum, but considering the roster we currently have & the rate at which it is developing, I think it is something that has to be given consideration. I'm all for stockpiling assets, but the team seems to be reaching the stage of condensing those assets in order to acquire that missing piece that puts us over the top, which is a true #1 offensive option. Again, this may not even be a possibility, in which case, the team should continue accumulating assets & hope to eventually package them for a James Harden type, like Houston was able to do.

As strange as it sounds, I don't think the Jazz do it. I think they love Exum's size, defense, and how coachable he is.

Yep. We need to be patient. IF he develops a shot, he becomes an amazing player because his defense is already solid. He gets burned at times, but that's ok...everyone does and he's a rookie.

Exum needs to be paired with Burks next year. Alec is the penetrator and Exum can continue to hang out at the 3pt line. I'd have Exum work on his strength, conditioning and 3PT shooting in the off-season.

That said, I'd still prefer Exum and Burks to come off the bench. Bring in a solid PG who can shoot 3's until Exum is ready. And bring in a 3&D wing. Hayward needs help. He can't be the only shooter on the floor when our starters are in.

TBH, I don't really care who we draft. We're not going to be able to trade up for Russell without giving up one of our core. And that's simply not worth it. Our help has to come via free agency or trade. If the draft has a decent stretch-4, I'd say Utah should go that route. Also intrigued by Hezonja. Can he play defense?

I'm not sure why people are down on Oubre. He has the talent to be the best wing in this draft. As for his maturity, I think he looks fine. He could grow another inch or two and you've basically got Paul George.

In response to Jazz4ever:

Not strange at all, I agree. I don't think they will do it, I just think they should. Really, it comes down to which assets would have to be included along with Exum. In a sport that only has 5 players (for your team) on the court at a time, it allows an individual player to have a greater impact on the game than in other sports, & makes the fit of those other 4 guys around him that much more important. I just think that unless you put an elite offensive player alongside Exum, Hayward, Favors, & Gobert, you will not have enough balance or fflexibility to get through 4 playoff series against top notch teams; all of which represent different challenges & matchup problems.

In response to Stifle Tower:

I agree that we need to be patient with Exum, if we decide to develop him. The 2 reason I'm not sure that we should is that I don't think his developmental timeline matches up with our current roster as I think he will take 2-3 years to develop into the player that we will need him to be to be competitive, while we have 3 players that are ready to contribute to a championship caliber team right now. Also, while I do believe that he will eventually develop into a great player in his own right, I don't believe that what he will excel at will best complement those other 3 players without an elite scorer alongside them (& I don't see how we could retain those 4 players if Exum becomes a star, along with a #1 option). Also, to clarify, Exum is the only 1 out of our current core that I would include in such a deal.
