Has anybody else been following Tony Jones's twitter? He's been having convos about what the Jazz will/should do in the offseason. As with a lot of twitter conversations, it's not always clear how strongly he holds the position, nor whether what he is saying comes primarily from his sources with the Jazz or his own opinion. Nevertheless he's been throwing out a lot of hints in which he seems to imply some knowledge about the Jazz's current thinking (who knows if he's right or not):
Jazz won't go for an upgrade or even 1-2 yr stopgap at PG -- Exum is the guy (he's very clear this is the Jazz's thinking)
Jazz would be hard pressed to get an upgrade at a wing -- they love Hood (it's not quite clear if this is all Jazz's thoughts, or partly his thoughts)
Jazz love two guys in draft: Hezonja and Porzingis -- but they've long since understood that they'll be gone far before the Jazz pick (seems pretty clear this info comes from Jazz)
Jazz are likely to go BPA route, maybe erring on the side of high upside who needs development time, since virtually anyone they bring in will not find many regular rotation minutes (TJ didn't bat away Oubre and Looney when their names were brought up)
Also emphasized that Jazz likely to address shooting in offseason (though that's probably not news to anybody)
TJ did bat away Dekker's name -- says many players higher on Jazz's list
Was doubtful that Stanley Johnson could even find a spot in the rotation ahead of Ingles next year if Ingles is back (sounded more like TJ's opinion, but I'm not sure)
Brought up Trey Lyles and Devin Booker as guys the Jazz like.
Jazz care very, very little about where they finish in the lottery. Culture development far more important than moving up a slot or two.
Hey, nice post. Idiot.
Seriously though, it's true that with Burks, Hood and Hayward, minutes at the wing are going to be hard to some by. I still think Oubre is a minor upgrade due to his length and athleticism--our perimeter defense could be phenomenal--but it's likely a minor upgrade. At this point, I see the Jazz using this draft to bring in a back-up big like Looney/Turner/Portis/Lyles--whichever one shoots best and has the most upside. I like Devin Booker, but don't think he'll take minutes from Hood unless he has some serious ball skills we don't know about. Hood is actually a surprisingly good passer.
So: Looney/Turner/Portis/Lyles and maybe Oubre if he's awesome in workouts.
